Makimaa lifts Atlanta Jr. Knights over Hampton Roads Whalers, 3-1

Derek Makimaa was all over the ice for Atlanta Jr. Knights, as he tallied two goals in Atlanta Jr. Knights' 3-1 win over Hampton Roads Whalers.

Makimaa's tallies came at 2:03 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Atlanta Jr. Knights and 9:46 into the third to make the score 3-1 Atlanta Jr. Knights.

Hampton Roads Whalers was stymied by Atlanta Jr. Knights netminder Brandon Haase, who stopped 39 shots during the victory. Haase certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.56 entering the contest.

Atlanta Jr. Knights made Hampton Roads Whalers' goaltenders to work between the pipes, finishing with 38 shots and forcing 35 saves. Brett Kilar made 22 stops and Blake Scott made 13. Atlanta Jr. Knights managed to stay out of the box better than usual, registering one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Atlanta Jr. Knights wound up below its season average of 14.0 penalty minutes per game.

Atlanta Jr. Knights also got a goal from Alexander Goodhue as well. More assists for Atlanta Jr. Knights came via Jordan Simmonds, who had two and William Bray, Hunter Scott, and George Gerasimou, who contributed one a piece.

Hampton Roads Whalers' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Atlanta Jr. Knights power plays. Hampton Roads Whalers did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. Hampton Roads Whalers puts an average of 3.9 pucks into the net per game. Atlanta Jr. Knights was unable to stop Hampton Roads Whalers from sending pucks towards the net, and Hampton Roads Whalers eventually piled up 40 shots on goal.

Hampton Roads Whalers was led by Matthew Zendejas, who scored the team's only goal. Zendejas scored 4:20 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Atlanta Jr. Knights. Taylor Paasch picked up the assist.

Hampton Roads Whalers incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
