Hampton Roads Whalers squeaks by Potomac Patriots, 6-4

Hampton Roads Whalers and Potomac Patriots were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Hampton Roads Whalers made the most of its opportunities and won, 6-4.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Scott Cornfield at 11:55 of the third period.

Hampton Roads Whalers was paced on offense by Matthew Zendejas and Cornfield, who combined for five points. Zendejas had two goals and one assist and Cornfield also notched one goal and one assist.

Hampton Roads Whalers' offense rang up 35 shots on Potomac Patriots' net. Hampton Roads Whalers' penalty kill was ineffective, and let in three goals to Potomac Patriots' power play unit.

Hampton Roads Whalers also got points from Cornfield, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Christopher Haynes also scored for Hampton Roads Whalers. More assists for Hampton Roads Whalers came via Cameron Snyder, who had two and Ioan Florea, Nicholas Michels, Christopher Marro, Dylan Woods, Taylor Paasch, Cody Pessig, Ryan Gullett, and Clayton Kanemitsu, who each chipped in one.

Potomac Patriots kept Hampton Roads Whalers' goalie busy throughout the game, and Blake Scott made 32 saves on 36 shots.

Potomac Patriots was led by Matthew Wipper, who finished with two goals and one assist. Wipper scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 14:01 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Potomac Patriots had gained a power play chance when Woods was whistled for hooking. Andrew Turgeon provided the assist. Wipper's next tally on the power play made the score 2-2 with 19:24 left in the second period. Graysonn Runey picked up the assist. Potomac Patriots additionally got points from Turgeon, who also registered one goal and one assist and Runey, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Potomac Patriots received assists from Joseph Pouliot, who had one.

Hampton Roads Whalers incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Garrett Forrest recorded 29 saves for Potomac Patriots. Potomac Patriots incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
