Grimsby blows out Chippawa, 7-2

The Grimsby Peach Kings had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 7-2 win over the Chippawa Riverhawks.

After the loss made the series score 3-0 in the best of seven series, Chippawa faces elimination next time out.

Mathew Paonessa had a great game for Grimsby, netting two goals. Paonessa scored at 19:29 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Grimsby and again while on the power play 8:21 into the third to make the score 6-2 Grimsby.

Both teams had a hard time staying out of the box, and they combined for 17 penalties during the game.

The Peach Kings made Riverhawks' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, getting 59 shots and forcing 52 saves. David Johnston made 18 stops and Jason Shaw made 34. Grimsby could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Peter Shantz, who totaled four minutes in penalty time with two minors.

Grimsby additionally got points from Lucas Dykstra, who also finished with one goal and two assists, Cooper Naugoris, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Arie Dendekker, who also had one goal and one assist. Jacob Tuck also scored for Grimsby. More assists for Grimsby came via Robert Wormald, who had four and Drew Whalen and Jason McNeil, who each chipped in one.

The Riverhawks were often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 21 minutes per game Chippawa had been spending in the box.

The Riverhawks were helped by Curan Whincop, who grabbed one goal. Whincop scored 1:00 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Chippawa. Tory Mclean provided the assist. Chippawa got a goal from Tyson Bell as well. Other players who recorded assists for Chippawa were Luke Brackett and Matt Goch, who contributed one each.

Jonathon Dilario turned away 14 pucks between the pipes for the Peach Kings. Grimsby registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities. The Peach Kings ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Adam Burt was ejected from the game. Chippawa registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Team's Aidan McCreadie, Bell, Whincop, Mclean, and Jason Turcin were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
