New Hamburg blows out Aylmer, 5-0

The New Hamburg Firebirds were firing on all cylinders against the Aylmer Spitfires, and when the final buzzer sounded Firebirds emerged with a 5-0 win.

After the loss made the series score 3-2 in the best of seven series, Aylmer faces elimination next time out.

New Hamburg excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Firebirds' defensive play was more effective than usual against the Spitfires. New Hamburg allows two goals per game. The Firebirds forced Aylmer goalie Brian Valentine to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

New Hamburg was helped by Sean Kienapple, who finished with one goal and two assists. Kienapple scored 2:30 into the first period to make the score 1-0 New Hamburg. Sam Murray picked up the assist. New Hamburg also got points from Kienapple, who also grabbed one goal and two assists and Murray, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Kory Nowak also scored for New Hamburg. In addition, New Hamburg received assists from Jordan MacBeth and Nick Pope, who each chipped in one.

The Spitfires managed to stay out of the box better than usual, totaling one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Aylmer wound up below its season average of nine penalty minutes per game. The Spitfires did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Aylmer puts an average of two pucks into the net per game.

Brodij Gerryts made 23 saves for the Firebirds on 23 shots. New Hamburg incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors and had no power play opportunities. The Firebirds ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Taylor Wood was ejected from the game. Valentine turned away 31 pucks between the pipes for the Spitfires.
