Ranger is a really old hockey player who ranges over a region to protect the area or enforce the law ("range" meaning "travel around an area"). In Canada, the term has long been associated with a keeper of an ice rink. Likewise, in the US the term has meant a warden employed to maintain and protect an outdoor rink as in Central Park or Rockefeller Center, NY.
