Shelter Island 5, Westhampton 4
The Shelter Island Bucks (15-17) walked off in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Gibby Sullivan (Bates) for a 5-4 win over the Westhampton Aviators on Friday.
The victory gives them the tiebreaker at 30 points with the Sag Harbor Whalers (13-14-4) due to the Bucks having two more victories.
Westhampton jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second, scoring three runs. Luke Rizzo (College of Wooster) hit an RBI single to get the Aviators on the board. The Aviators would get an additional run as Jasper Adelman (Lehigh) crossed the plate to make the score 2-0. Andrew Grenert (Pima CC) would bring in the final run of the second for Westhampton to make it 3-0.
The Bucks would respond in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run from Matt Holmes (Husson), which was his fourth home run of the season, that cut the score to 3-2.
Westhampton would get a run in the top of the third on an RBI ground-rule double by Brody Sprinkle (Azusa Pacific) that gave the Aviators a 4-2 lead.
The score would remain that way until the bottom of the sixth, when with two out, Shelter Island loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk. Alex Barrist (Lafayette), who was 3-for-4 on the day, ripped a two-run single that tied the score at 4-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, John Gannon (St. Lawrence) led off the inning with a double. He’d be pinch-run for by Jack Vallario (Fordham), who stole third being ninety feet away as Sullivan stepped up to bat. Sullivan would get the walk-off, being the hero of the day. Joe LaPrade (St. Lawrence) earned the win in relief for the Bucks, pitching two innings.
Shelter Island tries to hold on and make the postseason with three games remaining in the regular season. The Bucks travel to Southampton on Saturday to face the Breakers while the Aviators try to play spoiler against the North Fork Ospreys in Peconic.
Southampton 10, Sag Harbor 3
The Southampton Breakers took advantage of a nine-run third inning as they beat the Southampton Breakers by a score of 10-3, as they remain in the chase for the one seed in the HCBL playoff picture.
