XENIA SCOUTS vs MUSKEGON CLIPPERS - DH
GRADY’S FIELD - The Xenia Scouts and Muskegon Clippers split a double header wrapping up the season series between the two teams.
Xenia won this current series taking two out of three games also winning the season series 4-2.
The double header on Wednesday featured a pair of low scoring games. The Scouts won the opener 1-0 and the Clippers took the nightcap 2-1.
The two teams combined for just seven hits in the opener as the teams locked into a pitcher’s duel.
Troy Lopez (Westmont College) pitched six shutout innings for the Scouts giving up just two hits and one walk. Lopez struck out five batters while earning his first win of the season.
Jacob Maurer (Brandeis University) chalked up his second save of the season in just his third appearance since join the team on July 9. Maurer gave up a two-out single but induced a come backer to the mound for the game’s final out.
Muskegon’s Nathan Masar (Saginaw Valley State) was just as good on the mound for the Clippers. Masar shutout the Scouts in his five innings of work notching seven strikeouts giving up two hits and two walks.
The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the sixth inning when the Scouts scored the only run of the game.
Alex Hardacre (Madonna University) came in for the Clippers in the sixth inning ultimately being tagged with the loss.
Johnathan Jackson (Harding University) reached in the sixth with a one-out double. Hardacre got Carter Jackman (Mississippi College) to pop out in the infield for the second out. Troy Lynch (University of Minnesota Duluth) smacked a single to center driving home Jackson with the games only run in a 1-0 Scouts win.
The nightcap was just as tight as the opener as the Clippers came away with a 2-1 victory to salvage a split of the double header.
The Scouts got off to 1-0 lead in the third inning when newcomer Coleman Gray (Snead State CC) led off the inning with a triple. Gray, who was making his Scouts debut, scored on an RBI-groundout by Noah Manasan (Arizona Christian University).
The Clippers tied the game 1-1 in the sixth inning. Ben Meyers (Lake Michigan College) reached with one out on a ground rule double. Meyers found himself on third base when Cole Mason (Grand Valley State) and Luke Noack (Southern Arkansas University) reached on back-to-back walks. Meyers scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Taylor Head (Chattanooga State Tech).
In the seventh inning it was Mason that reached on a ground rule double. He would eventually come around the score the go ahead run on a wild pitch.
Davis Weeks (Michigan State), who pitched the final two innings for the Clippers, set down the Scouts in the seventh securing the 2-1 victory. Davis threw the final two innings striking out five Xenia batters while improving his record to 3-0 on the season.
The Scouts remain atop of the South Division standings with a 22-14 record. Xenia get a day of rest before kicking off a weekend series in Findlay on Friday night against the Flag City Sluggers.
The Clippers evens its record at 18-18 and is in fourth place in the North Division but just one game behind the Michigan Monarchs for second place in the standings. Muskegon returns to Southwest Ohio on Friday taking on the Hamilton Joes at Foundation Field.
MICHIGAN MONARCHS vs. GRAND LAKE MARINERS - DH
HILLSDALE COLLEGE - The Michigan Monarchs moved up two spots in the North Division standings sweeping a double header at home over the Grand Lake Mariners.
The Monarchs sweep the double dip and the series beating the Mariners by scores of 6-1 and 8-6.
Michigan (18-18) started the day at the bottom of the standings but with two wins leapfrog both the Sluggers who didn’t get its game in and the Clippers who split its double header with Xenia.
In the opener, the Monarchs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
Michigan broke the seal when Kenny McKinley (Middle Tennessee State) crossed the pay station on a sacrifice fly by Christian Holmes (UIC transfer). Greg Guzik (Central Michigan) scored on a Mariners throwing error giving the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
The Mariners cut the deficit in half when Isaac Sobieszczyk (Missouri Western commit) scored on an RBI-single by Jacob Loving (Palomar College).
The Monarchs got that run back in the bottom of the second when Wyatt Epple (Davenport University) grounded into a fielder’s choice allowing Tyler Fox (Ohio State) to score from third base.
Michigan put it out of reach in the third inning scoring three times. Holmes scored on an RBI-single by Kooper Etheridge (Madonna University) followed by a two-run single by Epple.
Ryan Torok (University of Toledo) went five innings on the mound for the Monarchs earning the victory. Torok surrendered just one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
Andrew George (Salem International University) pitched the final two innings holding the Mariners in check not allowing a run or a hit.
In the night cap, the Monarchs took care of business defeating the Mariners 8-6.
The Monarchs jumped out to a 4-0 lead after just one inning of play.
The Mariners answered taking the lead 6-4 after putting up a six-spot in the scoreboard.
Grand Lake batted around in the second starting the scoring on a solo homer by Ryker Hughes (University of Indianapolis). Austyn Peak (Morehead State) later scored the tying run on an RBI-single by Brandon Lang (Southwestern University). The Mariners took the lead when Salvatore “Sammy” Besztery (University of Rochester) launched a double scoring Jake Lopez (University of Scranton transfer). That was followed by Lang crossing the plate a balk charged to Monarchs pitcher Easton Remick (Lansing CC).
The Mariners didn’t hold the lead for long as the Monarchs tied the score plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Holmes tripled driving in Epple and came around to score on an RBI-single by Justin Best (University of New Orleans).
McKinley scored the go-ahead run for the Monarchs on a costly Mariners error in the fourth inning. Michigan scored an insurance run in the sixth when Best drove home Guzik with a sacrifice fly.
Sam Beemer (Michigan State), who earned the victory for the Monarchs pitching the final five and 1/3 innings, retired the side in the seventh inning closing out the game.
The Monarchs hit the road on Friday traveling to Athens starting a three-game weekend series against the Southern Ohio Copperheads.
The Mariners (10-26) will make the short trip to Lima taking on the first place Locos on Friday at Simmons Field.
HAMILTON JOES 3 FLAG CITY SLUGGERS 1 - Suspended End of 4th Inning
MARATHON DIAMONDS - The Hamilton Joes were leading the Flag City Sluggers 3-1 when the skies opened forcing the game to be suspended at the end of the fourth inning.
The game was spared from an early afternoon storm with the tarp on the field put on the field late the night before by Sluggers players an staff.
That only held off the inevitable as the second round of storms was the knockout punch.
The game will be resumed on Thursday in Hamilton at the point on interruption starting with the top of the fifth inning.
The Joes scored three runs in the second inning taking a 3-0 advantage. Preston Lynch (Panola Junior College), in his first at bat as a member of the Joes, delivers a two-run double driving in Brett Denby (Wright State) and Travis Yankovich (Lake Erie College). Mark Nowak (Northern Kentucky) scored on an RBI-groundout off the bat of Diego DeCello (Marietta College).
The Sluggers got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third inning. Brett Reed (Lawrence University) led off the inning with his second hit of the game and eventually scored on an RBI-groundout by Andrew Stechschulte (Ohio Northern University).
The game will be resumed at Foundation Field on Thursday with a scheduled 5:30 start time. The regularly scheduled game will now be a seven-inning contest taking place approximately 30 minutes after the first game concludes.
LIMA LOCOS vs. SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS - Postponed
BOB WREN STADIUM - The Lima Locos versus Southern Ohio game was rained out on Wednesday when storms rain through Athens just ahead of game time.
The was postponed and will be made as part of a double header at Bob Wren Stadium on Thursday starting at 5:05pm.

The league currently consists of 8 active franchises in Ohio and Michigan boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
