MUSKEGON CLIPPERS  VS.  SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS  -  DH

MARSH  FIELD - The Muskegon Clippers pull off a sweep of the Southern Ohio Copperheads sweeping a three-game series extending its winning streak to seven straight wins.

 

Muskegon wins the opener in sudden death and then two pitchers combined to no-hit the Copperheads in a seven-inning game.

 

Maxwell Salas (Northwood University) pitched the first six innings in the night snap striking out five batters and walking just two batters. Salas was pulled after throwing 74 pitches in his longest outing of the summer. He would improve to 1-1 on the season making just his second start of the summer. 

 

Winston Delp (Hillsdale College) came in for the seventh inning with the pressure of knowing he was there to preserve the no hitter. Delp set down the side in order striking out pinch hitter Jack Leonard (Hanover College) for the game’s final out. 

 

It’s the first no-hitter for the Muskegon Clippers since joining the GSLCL in 2017.

 

The Clippers offense only needed three runs on four hits to secure the win. 

 

Davis Weeks (Michigan State commit) providing the only run that Muskegon needed when he singled driving home Casey Barnes (University of Northwestern Ohio) in the second inning. 

 

Ben Meyers (Lake Michigan College) scored the second run in the third inning on and RBI-single by Jack Bakus (Lansing CC).

 

Ethan Delgado (Ecclesia College transfer) scampered home from third base with the final run when Ashten Wong (LSU Shreveport) hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

 

The Clippers held on to win the opener forcing the game into sudden death and coming away with the victory.

 

Muskegon took an early 5-0 lead but let it slip away. 

 

A two-run double by Luke Noack (University of Southern Arkansas) along with Taylor Head (Chattanooga State Tech) scoring on a wild pitch gave Muskegon a 3-0 first inning advantage. Back-to-back RBI-singles by Cole Leclair (Texas A&M Texarkana) and Aidan Robinson (Northwood University) in the third inning extended the lead to 5-0.

 

The Copperheads started a valiant comeback beginning with scoring a pair of runs in the sixth inning. 

 

Southern Ohio was down to its final turn at the plate in the seventh when the Copperheads tied the score 5-5. 

 

Derek Occhipinti (University of Akron) delivered an RBI-single driving in Reon Iwase (Oxnard College). The Copperheads were down to its final out when Ferguson smacked a two-out two-run single to right field driving in both Occhipinti and Haruta Endo (Minnesota West CC).

 

The Clippers were able to end the threat but were held scoreless in the bottom off the seventh by Copperheads reliever Jacob Ruiz (Ohlone College) forcing extra innings.

 

After each team was retied in order failing to score in the eighth inning the two teams went to the sudden death inning.

 

Southern Ohio went on offense but Weeks recorded back-to-back strikeouts stranding Endo on third base for the first of two victories on the day for the Clippers.

 

Muskegon (17-16) have now gone from last place to second place in the North Division during its current seven-game winning streak. The Copperheads fall to 13-19 after being swept in the three-game weekend series.

 

 

HAMILTON JOES  13  LIMA LOCOS  2  -  FINAL/7 Innings   

FOUNDATION FIELD - The Hamilton Joes evened its weekend series with a commanding 13-2 run-rule victory over the first place Lima Locos.

 

The Joes (16-16) sent 12 batters to the plate exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning.

 

Miguel Correa (Central Michigan) was one of the offensive heroes for the Joes going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, two RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen.

 

Jaxson Christ (Lake Erie College) chipped in going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

 

Christopher Roa (Miami University), Brett Denby (Wright State) and Mark Nowak (Northern Kentucky) each contributed two hits for the Joes.

 

Jordan Taylor (Wabash Valley College) improved his record to 2-1 on the season pitching a season high five innings. Taylor gave up just one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

 

The Locos (22-10) were held to just four hits on the night but didn’t do itself any favors out in the field. The Lima defense surrendered five errors. 

 

The series finale shifts to the Simmons Field on Sunday for the rubber game scheduled to begin the at 5:05pm.

 

 

XENIA SCOUTS  2  MICHIGAN MONARCHS  1  -  FINAL

HILLSDALE COLLEGE - The Xenia Scouts came back from losing a slugfest to winning a pitcher’s duel defeated the Michigan Monarchs 2-1 at Hill Stadium on the campus of Hillsdale College.

 

The Scouts (19-13) broke up a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth inning taking a 2-1 lead.

 

Andrew Sharpe (University of Central Washington) lead off the inning with a single. Carter Jackman (Mississippi College) came in to pinch run for Sharp advancing to third base on a ground rule double off the bat of Rolan Reyes (Westmont College). Kaden Wu (Taylor University) drove in the go-ahead when his sacrifice fly allowed Jackman to race home from third base.

 

Jacob Maurer (Brandeis University) came in out of the Xenia bullpen for the ninth inning. Making just his second appearance of the season, Maurer got into a bit of hot water.

 

The Monarchs (16-16) rallied in the ninth staring with Cannon Paul (Western Michigan) reaching on a one-out single. Bren Wilkinson (Cal State Northridge) worked a two-out walk putting Paul into scoring position. The runners advanced to second and third base when Maurer uncorked a wild pitch. Maurer then forced Kenny McKinley (Middle Tennessee State) into a game-ending groundout securing the victory.

 

The Scouts benefited from great pitching led by starter Luke Holcomb (Iowa Kaes CC). Holcomb, who didn’t factor into the decision, went six innings registering seven strikeouts while giving up just one run on four hits.

 

Danny Slaske (The Masters University) did earn his first victory of the season going two shutout innings with four strikeouts. Slaske allowed just two base runners on one hit and one walk.

 

Matthew Hubbard (University of Toledo) deserved a better fate being tagged with the loss for the Monarchs. Hubbard scattered six hits in six innings of work giving up just one run and zero walks. 

 

Xenia scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning when Jacob Souders (Samford University) crossed the pay station on a sacrifice fly by Troy Lynch (University of Minnesota Duluth).

 

The Monarchs scored it only run in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases. Justin Best (University of New Orleans) was hit by a pitch forcing home McKinley from third base.

 

The series will be decided on Sunday wrapping up at Hill Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 4:35pm.

 

 

FLAG CITY SLUGGERS  16  GRAND LAKE MARINERS  10 -  FINAL

MARATHON DIAMONDS - The Flag City Sluggers held on to win a combined 26-run, 30-hit slugfest coming away with a 16-10 win over the Grand Lake Mariners.

 

Flag City (15-16) never scored less than three runs in any of the four innings that it crossed the plate.

 

Will Lafferty (Marshall University transfer) went 3-for-6 at the plate for the Sluggers with a double and four RBIs. Harrison Engskov (Arkansas State transfer) was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

 

Chris Franks (Ashland University) and both of the Gardner brothers, Trey (Three Rivers CC) and Matt (Little Rock), each scored three runs.

 

The Mariners (10-22) was not devoid a offense superlatives either generating 14 hits on the night.

 

Jacob Loving (Palomar College) was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI’s. Sage Adams (Purdue Fort Wayne) was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Jake Lopez (University of Scranton transfer) and Isaac Sobieszczyk (Missouri Western commit) also provided two hits apiece.

 

The four-game series concludes on Sunday in Celina at Montgomery Field starting at 4:05pm. The Sluggers will be going for the series victory while the Mariners will be trying to salvage a split.
