LIMA LOCOS 6 HAMILTON JOES 2 - FINAL
FOUNDATION FIELD - The Lima Locos continue to roll down the tracks winning the opening game of a three-game series with a 6-2 road over the Hamilton Joes.
The Locos improve its league best record to 22-9 extending its convincing lead in the GLSCL North Division standings.
Lima scored three runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Hamilton (15-16) contributed to the Locos cause committing two of its five errors of the game during the opening inning.
The Joes chipped away on the deficit starting by scoring a run in the second inning. Miguel Correa (Central Michigan) lead off the inning with a double and was later at third base with the bases loaded. Noah Cassell (Wright State) grounded into a double play with Correa scoring from third on the play.
Hamilton scored another run cutting the deficit to 3-2 in the third inning. Brett Denby (Wright State) came up with a productive out thanks to an RBI-groundout driving home Jackson Wang (Wabash Valley).
That was all the closer the Joes would get as the Locos used the combination of two pitchers holding them at bay.
Evan Shapiro (Ball State transfer) got the start earning the victory while evening his record to 2-2 on the season. Shaprio struggled with his command at times giving up six walks but only gave up two runs on four hits and struck out four batters.
Landon Vandergrift (University of Akron) pitched the final four innings earning a save in the process. Vandergrift didn’t give a run or a walk with four strikeouts and scattering six hits.
The Lima offense scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings in support of its pitching staff.
Grant McGuire (Winthrop University) doubled in the fifth driving in Evan Holstein (Kennesaw State). Carter Schueler (Sauk Valley CC) crossed the plate scoring from third base on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. Schueler scored again in the eighth on a throwing error by the Hamilton catcher.
The series continues with the middle game is set for Saturday night again at Foundation Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
MICHIGAN MONARCHS 18 XENIA SCOUTS 12 - FINAL
HILLSDALE COLLEGE - The Michigan Monarchs won slugfest over the GLSCL South Division leading Xenia Scouts coming out on top 18-12 at Hill Stadium.
The two teams combined for a league best season high 30 runs on 27 hits.
The Monarchs (16-15) jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two innings and the game was never close after that point. However, The Scouts (18-13) never gave up and refused to allow themselves to be the victim of the run-rule early stoppage.
Caleb Webster (Trevecca Nazarene) was the offensive standout in game that had many very good performances. In a losing effort, Webster belted two home runs, drove in a league high seven RBIs thanks in part to two sacrifice flies.
Webster became just the second GLSCL player to hit two homers in a game joining Lima’s Braydon Kersey (Mercer University) who did so back on June 21 against the Southern Ohio Copperheads.
Not to be outdone, Michigan’s Tyler Fox (Ohio State) went 3-for-5 at the plate with a triple and five RBIs. Bren Wilkinson (Cal State Northridge) also collected three hits and Keegan Knupp (Eastern Michigan) scored four runs for the Monarchs.
The Monarchs also terrorized the base paths combining for 11 stolen bases on the night. Wyatt Epple (Davenport University) led the way with three steals with Knupp and Greg Guzik (Central Michigan) each swiping two bags.
Xenia centerfielder Johnathan Jackson (Harding University) is flying under the radar with a great season so far for the Scouts. Jackson, who scored four runs on Friday, is second in the GLSCL with a .357 batting average and stolen bases with 23.
The series continues on Saturday at Hill Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
GRAND LAKE MARINERS @ FLAG CITY SLUGGERS - DH
MARATHON DIAMONDS - The Flag City Sluggers and the Grand Mariners split a pair a close games during a Friday night double header at Marathon Diamonds.
The Mariners (10-21) won the first game in sudden and the Sluggers (14-16) took the night cap 2-1.
In the opener, the two teams played to a 3-3 tie through eight innings before they went into sudden death. The Mariners took the field putting the game into the hands on reliever Cason Bennett (Abilene Christian). Bennett, who just joined the team last week, validated the decision by not allowing the Sluggers to hit the ball out of the infield. The Sluggers stranded the potential winning run on third base taking the first game of the night.
Grand Lake led in the early going of the opener starting with a first inning RBI-single by Sam Lapping (Whitman College). The Mariners added two more runs in the fourth inning on a run scoring base by Sam Reczek (Olivet Nazarene) followed by a double steal seeing Jacob Loving (Palomar College) taking home.
The Sluggers came back to tie the game beginning when Matt Gardner (Llittle Rock transfer) forced home when Drew Stechschulte (Ohio Northern transfer) worked a bases loaded walk. Flag City tied it up in the sixth on an RBI-single by Jaxon Brown (Bowling Green State) followed by Ryan Ruch (Cal State Bakersfield) scoring when Gardner grounded into a double play.
The nightcap was a pitcher’s with Bennett returning to get the start on the mound for the Mariners. He gave up just two runs on five hits but that effort wasn’t quite good enough. Bennett struck out four batters and gave up two walks while throwing a six-inning complete game in the loss.
Flag City’s Braxton Betancourt (Huntington University commit) gave up just one run on six hits for his first complete win of the season. Betancourt struck out a season high eight batters while improving his record to 3-2 on the season.
Tanner Powell (Loyola University New Orleans) scored both runs for the Sluggers. Powell gave the Sluggers a 1-0 lead when he crossed the pay station in the second inning on an RBI-ground out by Rylan Mills (Southeast Missouri State).
Chase Alwardt (University of Indianapolis) tied the game 1-1 in the third when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Salvatore Besztery (University of Rochester).
Powell scored what turned out to be the game winner for the Sluggers on an RBI base hit by Ruch.
The teams play the third game of the four-game weekend series as the Sluggers wrap up its longest home stand of the year at Marathon Diamonds with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
MUSKEGON CLIPPERS 5 SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS 4 - FINAL
MARSH FIELD - The Muskegon Clippers stay hot extending it winning streak to five games with a 5-4 victory of the Southern Ohio Copperheads on Friday at Marsh Field.
The Clippers (15-16) scored all five of its runs in the sixth overcoming a 3-0 deficit.
Casey Barnes (University of Northwestern Ohio) got the scoring started hitting a three-run homer tying the game 3-3. Jackson Isaacs (Kalamazoo College) scored the go ahead run when Aidan Robinson (Northwood University) slapped a single to right field. The insurance run, which turned out to be the game winner, took place when Davis Weeks (Michigan State commit) scored on an RBI-single by Casey Joppie (Saginaw Valley State).
The Copperheads (13-17) shaved the margin to one run when Ronnie Rowley (MidAmerica Nazarene University) led off the eighth inning with a solo home run making it a 5-4 game.
Clippers reliever Lukas Brewer (Lansing CC) came in pitching the ninth inning setting down the Copperheads for his second save of the season.
The Copperheads took the initial 3-0 lead during the second inning. Derek Occhipinti (University of a Akron) broke the seal with a two-run double scoring both Will Heisler (University of a Akron) and Tylan Graves (Southwest Tennessee CC). Occhipinti came around to score on and RBI-single by Haruta Endo (Minnesota West CC).
The series wraps up on on Saturday with a double header at Marsh Field with the first pitch scheduled to take place at 5:05pm.

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate, founded in 1987, is a wood-bat league that is certified by the NCAA and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. The GLSCL is a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity that is one of 12 members of the National Alliance of Collegiate Summer Baseball (NACSB). The league currently consists of 8 active franchises in Ohio and Michigan boasting several players that have earned service time in major league baseball.
