Mystic Schooners vs. Bristol Blues

Bristol, CT – Despite being outhit eight to five, the Bristol Blues powered to a 4-1 victory over the Mystic Schooners behind an eighth-inning surge. 

 

Mystic struck first in the top of the fourth, as a Nick Locurto (Virginia Tech) single scored Michael Torres (Miami Ohio) to pull ahead 1-0. The Blues then responded in the bottom of the fifth, with a sacrifice fly from Jack Hopko (Rhode Island) scoring CJ Egrie (Holy Cross) to tie the game at one.

 

The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the eighth, when RBI singles from Nate Lincoln (Marist) and Jayden Novak (La Salle), as well as an RBI from Luke Nomura (Fairfield), put the Blues in the driver's seat heading into the ninth. Mystic was unable to respond, falling by a final score of 4-1.

 

Bristol pitching combined for 12 strikeouts on the day, led by starter Brendan Yagesh’s (Virginia Tech) eight. Houston Tomlinson (Texas A&M) earned the save, picking up two Ks, while reliever Pedro Leon (Holy Cross) struck out two as well. Liam Chamberlain (Bryant) was issued the loss for Mystic.

 

Bristol improves to 15-9 with the win, as they get the day off tomorrow before hosting the Danbury Westerners on Friday at 5:00 pm. The Schooners drop to 9-13, as they travel to the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks for a 7:05 pm contest tomorrow night.

Martha’s Vineyard Sharks vs. Danbury Westerners

Danbury, CT – Led by a five-run fifth inning, the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks toppled the Danbury Westerners 7-6 in a tight Wednesday night affair.

 

The first two innings were back and forth with both teams trading runs. Evan Appelwick (Miami Ohio) blasted a solo shot in the top of the first for the Sharks, while an error in the bottom of the frame scored two for Danbury. Martha’s Vineyard would score again in the top of the second on a Harley Goodner (Duke) RBI single, tying the game at two apiece.

 

Danbury took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Jack Lutte (Denison) RBI single, followed by a Peter Link (Sacred Heart) double to score Lutte and Garrett Larsen (Yale), jumping out to a 5-2 lead.

 

Martha’s Vineyard would immediately respond with an even bigger inning of their own, putting up five in the top of the fifth. Appelwick hit his second homer of the game, this one being a three-run shot, to knot the game at five. Brady Krzciok (Central Michigan) followed suit, blasting a two-run home run to put the Sharks up 7-5. 

 

Danbury could not catch up with the hot bats, as the Westerners were only able to score one in the eighth on an error, giving the Sharks the 7-6 win.

 

Right-hander Nash Villegas (Texas-Tyler) was credited with the win for Martha’s Vineyard, with teammate Colby McNeely (Rider) earning the save. Danbury’s Jacob Hines (CCSU) was credited with the loss.

 

With the win, Martha’s Vineyard improves to 13-9, breaking out of a tough losing streak. The Sharks take on the Mystic Schooners at home tomorrow at 7:05 pm, while Danbury drops to 8-10 and hosts the Newport Gulls tomorrow at 6:30 pm.

Newport Gulls vs Ocean State Waves

Final Score: Newport 6, Ocean State 5

 

Newport, RI – The Newport Gulls defeated the visiting Ocean State Waves at Cardines Field on Wednesday night, walking it off in dramatic fashion, 6-5. With the win, Newport continues their hot stretch, now winning nine of their last ten games.

 

The Gulls got on the board in the second inning with Cade Brown (Georgia Tech) scoring on a wild pitch, making it 1-0. In the top of the third, Ocean State took advantage of a Newport mistake to give them the lead. With the bases loaded, Coen Niclai (Oregon) put the ball in play, and an error from the third baseman allowed two to score on the play, making it 2-1, Waves.

 

In the fifth, Ocean State extended its lead off a Ryan Gerety (Northeastern) RBI ground-rule double and a sacrifice fly from Matthew Brinker (Northeastern), giving them a 4-1 lead. That lead wouldn’t last long for the Waves, as Newport came storming back. In the bottom of the inning, Matt Ossenfort (Michigan) drew a bases-loaded walk for one run. Later in the inning, Adam Agresti (St John’s) singled to score two more and tie the game up at 4-4.

 

The Waves took the lead in the top of the sixth when Gavin Greger (Bryant) doubled to score Zach Plasschaert (Fresno St) from second, and that halted the scoring until the bottom of the eighth when Newport started to work its magic again. With two outs already in the inning, Ryan Novak (Miami) belted his third home run of the season to tie the game 5-5.

 

In the bottom of the ninth, Newport had pinch-runner Shane Williams (Salve Regina) on second base with Matthew Bolton (Binghamton) up and two outs. Ocean State intentionally walked Bolton to get to Michael Gupton (Samford), and Gupton made them pay as he singled to score Williams and walk-off the game 6-5.

 

Aiden O'Connell (Vanderbilt) got the win for the Gulls, while Luc Lavigueur (Maine) was credited with the loss for the Waves. The next game for Newport will be on Thursday when they travel to take on the Danbury Westerners. As for Ocean State, they will resume action on Friday when they travel to face the Sanford Mainers.
