NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — Game three of the NECBL championship series went down to the wire, needing extra innings to determine a champion. For the second consecutive year, the Newport Gulls were crowned league champs, with an 8-7 win over the Sanford Mainers, in 10 innings.

The Gulls jumped out to a 6-2 lead, after three towering homeruns. Sanford made a comeback and eventually took a 7-6 lead before Newport tied the game in the 9th inning.

Dixon Williams, who has been exceptional this summer, was the hero for Newport after hitting a single up the middle in the 10th inning to score the game-winning run at Cardines Field.

This is the 8th time the Gulls have won the NECBL title.
