FOUNDATION FIELD - The Hamilton Joes finished off the Muskegon Clippers in run-rule fashion by a score of 13-3 sweeping the GLSCL Championship Series. It marks the fifth championship in franchise history and its third in the last four seasons.
Head coach Tyler Thamann can boost four GLSCL titles on his resume. Thamann has now won three as the Joes head coach and was a player on the 2016 championship team.
The Joes jumped off to an early start once again on a two-run double by third basemen Eli Kaiser (Ball State) in the second inning.
Hamilton scored three more times in the third inning on an RBI-double by Ryan Novak (Miami University) and a two-run single by Tommy Harrison (Miami University).
The Clippers scored in the fourth inning thanks in part to a rare Hamilton mistake. Sam Clay (Davenport University) lead off reaching on a two-base error. Clay would come around to score on an RBI-ground out by Justin Johnson (Eastern Michigan).
The Joes got the run back immediately with a lead off solo homer by Paul Osting (Western Illinois University) in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cam Gilkerson (Wright State) followed that with an RBI-double and later scored on a wild pitch during a strikeout.
The Clippers got off the deck in the fifth inning despite trailing 8-1.
Cole Mason singled and scored on an RBI-single by Copper Hums (Western Michigan). Hums would cross the plate on a sacrifice fly by Clay.
The Joes would make a call to the bullpen to its playoff stopper Eric Rawlings (Western Illinois). Rawlings, who attended nearby Badin High School, was dominate once again. After shutting down the Lima Locos in the semi-final round, Rawlings did the same thing against Muskegon earning his second victory of the playoffs. Rawlings threw three shutout innings giving up just one hit while striking out five batters.
Hamilton scored again in the sixth inning when Harrison struck again with an RBI base hit driving in Gilkerson.
The Joes finished off the Clippers in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring four runs. Charlie Schebler (University of Akron) delivered a two-run single for the ten-run advantage walking it off for the championship.
Harrison lead the nine-hit attack for the Joes, five of which were for extra bases, as he went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Harrison lead the Joes in the playoffs with a .471 batting average.
Osting went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Gilkerson and Novak each scored three runs.
Carson McCoy (Patrick Henry CC) accounted for half of the Clippers six hit total. McCoy went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a stolen base.
The Clippers have nothing to be ashamed despite the two losses to the Joes. Muskegon won the franchise’s first ever playoff game advancing to its first ever championship series appearance. The Clippers ended he regular season with a record of 20-16 adding two more wins in the post season.
Hamilton, who entered the GLSCL in 2009, have now won titles in 2010, 2016, 2021, 2022 and 2024. The Joes finished the regular season with a league best record of 26-9 plus going a perfect 4-0 during the postseason.
