6/16 Recap: North Fork Gets Road Win at Westhampton

The Sag Harbor Whalers moved into a three-way tie for the top playoff spot with North Fork and Shelter Island at 20-15 with all three teams having one game remaining on Tuesday. Sag Harbor swept South Shore in a doubleheader by final scores of 11-3 and 14-6.
Teddy Cashman (Lafayette) had his fourth home run of the season in Game 1 while Tucker Genovesi (St. Bonaventure) and Jack Gold (Pomona-Pitzer) had a pair of RBI. Will Darrell (Vassar) earned the win for Sag Harbor in the first game improving his record on the season to 4-1.
The second game saw the Whalers pull away from South Shore with an eight-run bottom of the fourth inning. The scoring was highlighted by a three-run home run by Gold which was his ninth of the season.
On the South Shore side of the boxscore in Game 2, Anthony Scarabino (Albany) had five RBI for the Clippers including a grand slam in the top of the second inning. Scarabino leads the Clippers in RBI this season with 25.
Kris Vinski (St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn) got the win for the Whalers in Game 2 pitching 2.2 innings of relief.
After Sunday’s action, Jack Gold currently leads the HCBL in all three triple-crown categories. Gold is hitting .438 for the season with nine home runs and 34 RBI. Gold holds the RBI lead by two over Shelter Island’s John Gannon (St. Lawrence) as he tries to become the second triple-crown winner in HCBL history and the first since 2009.
Southampton 5, Shelter Island 0
The Southampton Breakers shut out the Shelter Island Bucks at Southampton High School by a score of 5-0 and now lead the South Shore Clippers by one point for the final playoff spot in the HCBL.
Southampton broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Cole Maucere (New Haven) to lead 1-0.
The Breakers added to their lead in the fourth inning scoring three runs on a Matthew Graziose (Central Connecticut St.) RBI double and a two-run single from Joseph Frazzetta (New Haven).
Southampton would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run by Aidan Barry (Villanova) which was his fourth of the season.
Breakers pitching combined for a two-hit shutout as starter Kyle Kearns (West Chester) allowed one hit through five innings with six strikeouts and a walk. Kenneth Franquiz (New Haven) pitched the sixth and only allowed one hit while Louis Stallone (Sacred Heart) worked around three walks in the seventh to preserve the shutout.
Southampton (16-17-1, 33 Points) plays South Shore (16-18, 32 Points) in a big game on Monday at Southampton High School with the Breakers needing a win to clinch the final playoff spot in the HCBL.
North Fork 9, Westhampton 6
The North Fork Ospreys got a 9-6 win over the Westhampton Aviators on the road at Aviator Field in Westhampton Beach.
Joseph Dwyer (SUNY Oneonta) highlighted the North Fork offense with a home run and four RBI. Dwyer this season is hitting .379 for North Fork with four home runs and 28 RBI. Dwyer currently ranks third in the HCBL in batting average.
Nick Pratt (UMBC) and Leighton Helfrick (UC Davis) had two RBI each for the Ospreys in the win. Tyler DiRocco (Farmingdale St.) was 3-for-4 at the plate for North Fork with an RBI.
On the Westhampton side of the boxscore, Tyler Smith (Saint Peter’s) and Zev Moore (MIT) had home runs for the Aviators.
Alex Ardemagni (Washington (MO) got his fourth win of the season for North Fork pitching three scoreless innings.
