Lovich, Caldon Dominate in Week Three

Date:  Source: Ocean State Waves

Now three weeks in to the collegiate baseball season, things are gearing up across the nation. In an already exciting season, we’ve seen our share of upsets in the competitive slate that is division I baseball, which only fuels the love for the game. Two players from the 2024 Waves roster have had red-hot starts to their season through three weekends. Your week three Pitcher of the Week, presented by Whaler’s Brewery, is junior Mike Caldon out of Felician University, and your Rienzi Pasta Player of the Week is sophomore infielder Jackson Lovich from the University of Missouri.

Making a splash to extinguish the New Haven offense. Mike Caldon started the series off strong, leading the Golden Falcons to its first win of the weekend. The first five innings were five-up-five-down with the Mataram, NJ native in the drivers seat. In his longest outing of the 2024 campaign, Caldon recorded a career-high of eight strikeouts and six innings pitched.  Taking the weekend series 3-1, Caldon fueled the fight for the Green and Gold, gathering three more wins on the year. Felician will welcome the American International College Yellow Jackets for a three-game series on the weekend.

Earning Rienzi Pasta Player of the Week honors for the second time on the young season, is sophomore first baseman Jackson Lovich. The University of Missouri bounced-back from its game-one loss to Northern Kentucky to record its highest-scoring game in 14 seasons to win it 28-10. In a first-inning offensive clinic, the Tigers took a 14-0 lead, forcing the Norse through three pitchers in an inning that saw seventeen Missouri at-bats. Missouri continued this offensive showcase through their third game, but evidently dropped the deciding game three of the series 16-15, sending the Norse home with a series victory. Despite the loss, Lovich tallied two home runs on the weekend, and brought in seven in the 44-run weekend with the Tigers. The sophomore matched his career-high of four RBI’s and has registered a hit in a career high of five consecutive games on the conclusion of the Tigers onslaught of the Norse. Missouri now looks for it’s second win on their home stand in their mid-week matchup with the Lindenwood Lions.

Both of these teams head into this weekend looking to get back into the win column against American International and Lindenwood. We’re so proud of these guys and can’t wait to see what else they accomplish this season! T-89 days until the boys join us in the Ocean State.
