2023 SFCBL Coach of the Year
Date: Aug 14, 2023
While Eddie Blake is best known for playing baseball for Concord University, something people probably don’t know about Blake is that he graduated in Health Science and is currently pursuing a master's degree in athletic training.
Blake is originally from Moneta, Virginia, and went to Staunton High School where he played both Varsity Football and Baseball. Blake was first introduced to athletic training in high school, just taking the course so he didn’t have to take another class, but he quickly realized that he really enjoyed it and that it came very easily to him. The medical field is nothing new to Blake. His father is a senior director of medicine at a hospital in his hometown. His grandfather was a chiropractor and his grandmother was a physician assistant. The medical field runs deep in the Blake family.
At Concord University, Blake is a right-handed Mountain Lions pitcher. He was an honorable mention for the All-Mountain East Conference. Over his three years with the Mountain Lions, he has struck out 149 batters, pitched 180.2 innings, and started in 21 games, with a 14-11 record. His favorite memory from playing at Concord so far is when his team made it to the conference tournament. Blake said, ‘The first game everyone was nervous, and in the past, the team had just thrown all their starting pitchers every game they played.’ He says the tournament's first game was his favorite because the Mountain Lions “came out firing, lit it up, and absolutely slumped the team.”
Eddie Blake is currently pitching in the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League with the Boynton Beach Buccaneers, where he says he can’t complain about being in Florida because the weather is so nice. He loves “the environment” as a whole with the Bucs. But another plus is that he is also rooming with his college roommate from Concord, Michael Dupont. He also has another college teammate on the Bucs with him, MJ Hunter. Blake has been playing in the league for 2 years now. He says his favorite memory from playing in the SFCBL was a game last year against the Clippers when the Bucs were down 10 to 2 and they came back and won in 9 innings, 12 to 11.
Blake is hoping to become a physician's assistant after getting his master's at Concord University because he “likes helping people… and can’t play baseball forever.” He mentioned that a physician's assistant would allow him to branch out later on in whatever he wants to do next.
