The BYU hockey team has faced a lot of adversity over the years, but this season has been full of trials for the team.

Last spring Brigham Young University informed the team that they would no longer allow affiliation with the school. All signs pointed to a firm stand against any discussion and it appeared that this would be the BYU hockey teams last season. Fortunately, most of the recruiting for this season had been done and all recruits were informed of the decision and still decided to play for BYU.

As the season got underway and the game schedule picked up the Cougars faced three consecutive out of State road trips. Injuries plagued the team and by the end of the Fall semester 8 players were on the injured reserve list.

Covid restrictions and illness also affected the team, but in spite of these set backs, the players continued to face the challenges with an attitude typical of those committed to their brothers and their purpose, they didn't quit.

Lead by team Captain Jacob Eisenstat and a group of amazing alternate captains, the boys were undaunted in every game. Earning comments from other players and teams applauding the Cougars firm determination.

After watching the BYU team beat #3 ranked Providence in overtime, the Head Coach of Weber State said, "Your boys are relentless and aren't afraid of the moment, and I have a ton of respect for that."

The team held to the team's virtues of being faithful, exact, focused, bold, firm, and relentless. It showed.

Even one of the opposing goal tenders texted, "I just gotta tell you the resiliency and work ethic of your team is incredible. You guys literally never quit. It's unreal."

In spite of set backs, the team had a great record this season. With one of the hardest strength of schedules in the West Division and many opponents ranked in the top 10 and some within the top 5. Many of these games were fought to overtime, and most of these teams were beaten at least once by the relentless Cougars.

In the Utah Cup tournament which determines the Collegiate State Champion, BYU finished as runner up to Weber State (#9) after beating Utah State(#15) to go to the Championship game.  Then in the following week in the Mountain West Collegiate Hockey League Championship, BYU had to win again against Utah State (#15) and then take on Providence (#3) with a win to move on to the Championship game against Montana State (#4) where the Cougars finished once again as the runner up in the Conference Championship.

With a final record of 17 wins, 7 losses, 4 overtime losses, and one tie the team represented itself, the school, the community and its many fans in a way they could be proud of.

As has been stated in the previous story, Brigham Young University has been willing to meet with the team and discuss the conditions under which the team might be able to keep its affiliation with the school.  There have been no guarantees, but talks seem to be going in a positive direction.

We are hopeful that there will be another season of BYU Cougar hockey for our many supporters to enjoy.
