The Big Sticks were at home once again to complete their multi-day, multi-city stretch against the Wheat City Whiskey Jacks.
Adam Senden was on the mound for the start after a quick turnaround from his three innings of relief on Thursday. For the Whiskey Jacks, it was Jake Anderson on the mound after he got a win against the Big Sticks back on July 13.
The Big Sticks got to Anderson early as thanks to a big first inning where Matt Olive drove in two on a single, and two more scored on an error off the bat of Chewy Sanders. This big inning was enough to knock Anderson out of the game as he was replaced by Kelan Scanlan after the first.
The top of the third inning rolled around and the Whiskey Jacks got to business as they were able to strike for six consecutive singles to tie the game up at four and turn it into a bullpen game as Kenny Stewart came in with two men in scoring position to relieve Senden. Stewart was able to get three straight outs to keep the game tied.
Fast forward to the bottom of the sixth, where Thurston reached on a single before Derek Gellos ripped a triple to the right-center gap and put the Sticks up 5-4.
Kenny Stewart was masterful in his relief outing, as he went five shutout innings allowing only two hits and striking out five to set himself up for the win.
The Sticks got some big insurance for the bullpen in the bottom of the seventh as they were started with a Matt Olive double and a Travis Ray Jr. single to score him. Much later in the inning, Joe Osborn had a bases-loaded, two-out opportunity, and battled off pitches before drawing a walk to score one more. Then it was Derek Gellos again as he roped a single to score two more and extend the lead to 9-4.
The Whiskey Jacks started to mount their rally in the eighth against newcomer Matt Johnston as they were able to get one on a McDowell groundout, and two more on a Nolan Lingley double. Matt Slowik entered in relief and got the final out with hopes of locking down the four out save.
Slowik did exactly that he set down the side in order in the ninth to secure the third straight win for the Big Sticks.
The Big Sticks scored their 9 runs on 12 hits with 1 error, and the Whiskey Jacks scored 7 runs on 12 hits with 1 error.
The Whiskey Jacks fall to 7-14 on the half, six games out of first, and will now head back to Grand Forks to kick off a four-game series with the division-leading Souris Valley Sabre Dogs (13-8).
The Big Sticks improve to 12-9 in the second half, one game out of first place, and they stay at home for a four-game series against the Mining City Tommyknockers (12-8). The top of the division battle will take place at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark Tuesday, July 26 at 6:05 PM MDT.
