The Big Sticks faced off with the Wheat City Whiskey Jacks once again on Tuesday for the final game of the two-game set.
Starting on the mound for your home team was newcomer Justin Butz of New Mexico Junior College. Jack Anderson entered the game with a 1-5 record and took the mound for the Whiskey Jacks.
The Big Sticks got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Adam Senden, last night’s winning pitcher, singled to drive in Matt Olive and give the Sticks the early 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Whiskey Jacks were able to tie the game up as, with the bases-loaded and two outs, Jaxon Sorenson took a pitch off his elbow to allow a run to score. Butz was able to work out of the situation with a seven-pitch strikeout of the next batter.
Fast forward to the top of the fifth where, after getting the first two outs, Butz allowed back-to-back singes and was then relieved by Carson Lundmark. Lundmark allowed a single to load the bases before walking the next two batters to allow two runs to score. He was able to induce a groundball for the third out, but not before the Whiskey Jacks had taken the 3-1 lead.
3-1 is how the final score would read as Anderson continued through six innings before Matthew Dalquist came in to get the three-inning save as he allowed only one baserunner.
In the losing effort, the Sticks got their only run on 5 hits and made 2 errors, while the Whiskey Jacks managed 3 runs on 8 hits with no errors.
With the win, the Whiskey Jacks improve their second half record to 4-7, to go along with their overall record of 18-23. Wheat City will travel to Pierre on Wednesday for two games against the Trappers (11-30) before returning home for three more against Pierre.
The Big Sticks now fall to 6-5 on the second half and 23-18 overall. They will travel to Minot on Wednesday for one game against the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs (29-14) before returning home for one more game against the Sabre Dogs. First pitch on Wednesday evening is set for 6:05 PM MDT.
