Matadors Set Tryout Dates
Date: Aug 12, 2022
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Geno Norraik recorded his first career hat trick Friday potting four goals total en route to a 9-4 victory over West Coast Hockey Conference rival UC Santa Barbara.
The Matadors winning streak now stands at a season long seven games. They also remained perfect in WCHC play with a 5-0 record.
Norraik scored the Matadors third, fourth, sixth and eighth goals. His hat trick goal was also his team leading fifth power play marker this season. Matt Hoover and Nik Giers also had big nights as both players scored twice.
Hoover and Dante Thorne opened the scoring for CSUN. Nishay Chitale got UCSB into the game at 8:53 of the first period with a power play goal. But Norraik gave the Matadors a three-goal cushion heading into the dressing room.
Giers' game winning goal at 13:14 of the second was an unusual one. His shot went off goaltender Logan Guerrero then went off defenseman Mitch Kiner and into the back of the net. The Gauchos kept pressing though and Ryan Anderson narrowed the gap to 5-2. After Norraik's power play goal Chitale picked up his second goal a minute later at 9:02.
UCSB made CSUN a little more nervous with a goal from Justin Driffill just 1:01 into the third to make it a two goal game. But CSUN's depth proved to be too much as the Matadors scored the final three goals of the game. After Giers and Norraik scored Hoover finished things off with perhaps the prettiest goal of the night. He forced a turnover inside UCSB's zone and outwaited Guerrero by skating to his right and roofing the puck.
Vincent Sepe earned the win by making 23 saves improving his record to 8-0-1-1.
CSUN went 1-for-2 on the power play while UCSB finished 1-for-7. The Gauchos had a great chance to really get back into the game when they trailed 6-3 in the second with back-to-back abbreviated 5-on-3 opportunities but came up empty.
The Matadors are still perfect in six all-time games against the Gauchos dating back to 2010-11 when UCSB started its program.
CSUN goes for a weekend sweep at the University of San Diego Saturday at 8:40 p.m.
