Date: Aug 12, 2022
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - CSUN moved to 2-0 on its Washington road trip Friday beating Western Washington 9-2.
The Matadors scored the first six goals of the game and never looked back.
Grayson Szumilas had a big night recording his second career hat trick while Quentin Abaya and Christian Parks each scored two goals.
Szumilas opened the scoring at 12:57 of the first period. A little over four minutes later Abaya potted his first of the game. Then with just 15 seconds left after Zach Carnes caught a Viking on a breakaway Szumilas had an abbreviated breakaway of his own on the right wing and scored short side on Jake Holden.
CSUN picked up right where they left off scoring two goals within the first 3:07 of the middle frame. Parks scored his first followed by Geno Norraik. Abaya added another one at 6:55. Just 43 seconds later Western Washington finally got into the game when Alex Stoneham picked up a missed shot off the end wall and fired it home. Only 1:12 later Stoneham buried a rebound past Caleb Mead on the power play to cut the deficit to 6-2. The Matadors kept the Vikings from really getting back into the game though by killing off a full two minute 5-on-3 at the end of the period.
Eli Berengut made it 7-2 just 30 seconds into the third. Parks buried his second of the game at 10:48. Lastly Szumilas capped off his hat trick at 9:36.
Mead improved his record to 4-0-0-1.
The Matadors never received a power play while the Vikings went 1-for-4 on the man advantage.
It was the third ever game between the schools and the first since CSUN traveled up to Bellingham for a two game series in October 2013. The Matadors beat the Vikings for the first time after earning a 4-4 tie and losing 5-2.
CSUN kept its undefeated record in regulation intact at 10-0-1-2 while also staying perfect on the road at 5-0.
The Matadors go for the Evergreen State sweep Saturday back in Mountlake Terrace against Washington at 7:15 p.m.
