Matadors Set Tryout Dates
Date: Aug 12, 2022
IRVINE, Calif. - The Matadors shut out WCHC rival Cal State Fullerton Saturday at the brand new Great Park Ice and Fivepoint Arena in Irvine 13-0.
CSUN earned a pair of WCHC victories this weekend to improve to 3-0 in conference play.
Caleb Mead made 23 saves to earn his third career shutout. It wasn't a cheap one either as Mead made a pair of notable saves in the third period on a 2-on-1 and a breakaway.
The Matadors scored three goals in the first period all on special teams. Zach Carnes opened the scoring deflecting in a John Michael Laurin shot on the power play. Geno Norraik finished off a rebound to double the lead also on the power play. Finally Quentin Abaya forced a turnover at the CSUN blue line and slid the puck through the five hole of Zach Grago on a shorthanded breakaway. It was Abaya's fourth career shorthanded goal.
Three more goals came in the middle frame but this time all at even strength. George Reznikov scored one of the nicest goals of the night sending a backhand shot to the top shelf. Laurin then scored with just 1:17 left on the clock. Only 28 seconds later Christian Parks finished off the period.
The Matadors really pulled away in the third. Eli Berengut scored on the power play. Then Laurin followed suit on the man advantage. Laurin finished off the hat trick at 9:37. It was the captains second career three-goal game. Just 24 seconds later Laurin scored again to make it 10-0. Berengut potted his second of the period at 8:27 capping off a three goal run within a minute and ten seconds. Norraik scored his second at 3:51 and then Berengut also recorded a hat trick 21 seconds later. It was Berengut's eighth career hat trick.
Special teams were just that for CSUN as they went 4-for-5 on the power play and added a shorthanded goal while killing off five penalties.
The 13 goals tied a single-game high for the Matadors this season. They beat CSU Bakersfield 13-2 in the home opener.
Next Saturday is a rematch with the Titans at the Simi Valley Iceoplex. Puck drop is at 9:15 p.m.
