Matadors Set Tryout Dates
Date: Aug 12, 2022
The Matadors got the party started early, with Quentin Abaya scoring less than a minute and a half into the first period and it was all CSUN from there. The Matadors piled on three more goals in the first period by Tom Dobrokhot, Grayson Szumilas and Geno Norraik. Drew Murchison tallied the long Grand Canyon goal of the game in the last two minutes of the first period. CSUN dominated GCU all game, both with possession and physical play as the Lopes could not keep up with bigger, faster Matadors.
Eli Berengut and Zach Carnes put on a show with dueling goals throughout the period. Berengut got the things rolling two minutes into the period, followed by two goals from Carnes. GCU goaltender Gabe Lepper was pulled after the 7th goal and Bobby Lucas came in for relief. Not to be out done by Carnes, Berengut scored on a break away for a hat trick just 14 seconds after Lucas got between the pipes. Carnes would bury one more goal to get his hat trick and take the Matadors to 10-1. Grayson Szumilas would score just two minutes later for his second of the game to put the Matadors up 11-1 after two periods of play.
Matador senior goaltender Vincent Sepe was given the rest of the game off for CSUN stopping 12 of 13 shots at the conclusion of the second period and sophomore Jack Titter finished off the uneventful running time 3rd period, making seven saves. CSUN out shot the Lopes 45 to 20.
CSUN remains undefeated in regulation and looks to be one of the strongest teams in California again this season with a 6-0-1-1 record, outscoring their opponents 51-24 so far. Next weekend CSUN has two big conference games - Loyola Marymount on Friday night at the Iceoplex and CSU Fullerton Saturday at Great Park Ice. LMU and CSUN both had impressive performances at the Cali Classic and have put up similar scores against common opponents. The game kicks off at 8:45pm at the Iceoplex in Simi Valley.
