CSUN dominant in home opener

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - CSUN remained perfect on the season Friday with a dominant effort in its home opener beating Cal State Bakersfield 13-2.

     The Matadors jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first period. Christian Parks opened the scoring at 13:47 followed by a goal 13 seconds later by Quentin Abaya. Matt Bushton, Eli Berengut and Alex Marbach finished off the period.

     John Michael Laurin made it 6-0 at 13:51 of the second. The Roadrunners finally got into the game 25 seconds later when Brandon St. Louis scored. But CSUN potted the final two goals of the period from Bushton and Marbach.

     St. Louis struck again on the power play at 16:09 of the third to narrow the gap to 8-2. The Matadors kept the pressure on and closed out the game scoring five unanswered goals. Matt Hoover scored just 11 seconds after St. Louis goal. Geno Norraik followed then Hoover got his second goal of the period during 4-on-4 play. Nik Giers and Grayson Szumilas finished things off.

     Caleb Mead picked up the victory in net.

     The only thing CSUN failed to do was score on the power play. They went 0-for-3 while CSU Bakersfield finished 1-for-3.

     The Matadors are now 3-0 on the season, 4-0 including their exhibition win over Fresno State last weekend.

     Up next is a rematch of last season's West Coast Hockey Conference championship game against Long Beach State Saturday Oct. 5 at the Iceoplex. Puck drop is at 9:30 p.m.
