Presidents' Cup 2022
Date: Jun 21, 2022
It took all five games to find a champion, but in the end Seneca WarChiefs captured their sixth FNJBLL title in six seasons. They raised the championship trophy on their home floor Sunday after a Game 5 victory over the Onondaga Jr. Redhawks 17-10.
2019 was another dominating summer for the boys in green and purple. After a perfect 12-0-0 regular season Seneca easily dispatched Tyendinaga Thunder in the semifinals with a pair of big wins (23-3; 15-6).
The second seeded Redhawks had a bit tougher road, but also swept their way past the Mohawk Medicine Men 16-12 and 16-15.
The best-of five finals began like everyone expected with the WarChiefs winning the opening game 13-3. From that point on though the series took a shift. Onondaga had raised their level of intensity and it showed in their play winning Game 2 at home 12-10.
With Game 3 at Cattaraugus Community Center the WarChiefs looked to regain momentum, but instead were stunned by the Redhawks 15-13. It was the first time ever Seneca, who have a 65-1-0 all-time regular season record, had lost two straight games in FNJBLL.
The champs responded like champions do winning Game 4 to even the series. The finale was a back-and-forth battle for two periods, tied 7-7 late in the second frame, before Seneca pulled away.
It will be the sixth trip to Founders Cup for the Seneca WarChiefs who have medaled (three silver, two bronze) at every tournament appearance. Hosting in 2019 are the Manitoba Blizzard. Founders Cup is scheduled to begin August 12 in Winnipeg.
