Last night proved to be wild, replete with anger, and then joyous.
Things started off quickly in the first inning when Spearfish took a 2-0 lead. Center fielder Brent Richey slammed his second homer of the series, and the Trappers trailed early.
However, that deficit was erased in the bottom of the frame. After Ken Scott walked with one out, Zane Phelps singled, and both of them would score off of two errors by the catcher Dawson Martin for Spearfish. Martin would throw the ball into center field on a stolen base attempt by Phelps, and then wildly threw it into right field on a dropped third strike to Billy Moreland.
Again, the Sasquatch drew blood in the top of the second inning. Martin replenished his energy with a solo home run, and Z Westley quickly followed with an RBI double, his first hit of the series. By the end, the visitors were in front, 5-2.
Pierre got one back in the bottom of the frame thanks to an RBI two bagger by first baseman Sam Kalberer. Kalberer would exit the game later with an apparent foot injury.
With the score at 5-3, no teams would touch home for quite some time. The Trappers left two men on base in each of the third and fourth innings, with starter Brayden Spears for Spearfish going five innings of three run baseball.
The Sasquatch would restore the three run cushion in the top of the sixth. Chad Call would single in Tucker Roe, who reached base on an error.
Then, at 6-3 Spearfish, Pierre started to rally.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Trappers cut the deficit to 6-5 on a pair of hits, an RBI double by Player of the Game Niko Piazza and an RBI single by Michael Herrera.
But the bottom of the seventh was even greater. With one out in the frame and Alex Gonzales on first, Moreland popped a ball into shallow center field that was misplayed by Richey. This allowed the runners to get to second and third, and a base hit by Piazza and batter later gave Pierre their first lead of the night, 7-6. Another run would cross home, and for the second night in a row, the Trappers were ahead after being behind, 8-6.
Pierre would add another tally in the eighth and Moreland came on for his second save of the season, and the Trappers won their second consecutive Beef Cup, 9-6.
