Two-Day Event Marks HCBL Opening Day 2024
Date: Apr 12, 2024
Nearing the playoff push in the 2019 HCBL season, a pair of players played their finest baseball of the summer and were recognized in the weekly awards for Week 6.
Southampton’s Johnny Hipsman (Richmond) was named the New Era Cap Player of the Week while Riverhead’s Bobby Vath (NYIT) was awarded the Ace Hardware Pitcher of the Week award.
Hipsman batted .440 in Week 6 for the Southampton Breakers. The Richmond Spider had 11 hits in 25 at-bats during the week, hit four doubles and scored six runs. In a doubleheader sweep of the Shelter Island Bucks on July 7th, the Richmond Spider went a combined 5 for 9 in the doubleheader with two doubles, an rbi and a stolen base.
Vath made Riverhead Tomcats history on July 8th against Shelter Island. In the first game of a doubleheader, the Long Island native became the first Riverhead Tomcat to throw a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Bucks. Vath struck out seven batters and did not allow a single walk. It was the seventh no-hitter in the history of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League
The HCBL weekly awards are voted on each weekend by the league’s seven head coaches and are announced each Tuesday.
