Gulls Cruise Past Westerners

By Zach Letson – Media Operations Assistant

Newport (11-6) scored early and often, defeating the NECBL leading Danbury Westerners (12-5) 10-3 on Monday night at Cardines Field. The win moves the Gulls just a game behind the Westerners for first in the Southern Division with three games left against Danbury this season.

After Danbury took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Gulls wasted no time responding with a big inning of their own. Brett Vosik continued his strong play over the last week with an RBI single that scored Greg Cavaliere. One batter later Justyn-Henry Malloy belted a three-run homer high over the center field wall, giving Newport a 4-2 lead.

Gulls starting pitcher Jordan Marks (2-0) earned the win, pitching five innings while giving up just three runs and adding six strikeouts. After giving up three early runs, Marks settled in and dominated a strong Westerners lineup, shutting out Danbury over his final 3.1 innings.

Vosik picked up his second RBI of the night when he drove a double high off the right field wall in the bottom of the fifth inning. An inning later, Newport’s clutch hitting continued when the Gulls executed a perfect double-steal, and one batter later Cavaliere cracked a double into the left field corner, plating two more Gulls and extending the lead to 7-3.

Newport’s bullpen picked up where Marks left off, with Mike Sansone, Mike Townsend, and Carson Rudd pitching a combined four shutout frames to help close the door on the win.

The Gulls continue Southern Division play when they travel to Old Mountain Field to take on the Ocean State Waves (7-14) on Tuesday, July 2nd. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
