Concordia Takes Final Game Of Regular Season

(Chelsea, MI) – Concordia men's hockey played their final game of the regular season on Friday afternoon, hosting the club team of Eastern Michigan University at the Arctic Coliseum.  Prior to the game, the Cardinals honored senior Zack Williams (SR/New Boston, MI).  CUAA pulled away in the third period to earn a 7-4 victory in their home finale.

 
Elijah Gibbons (SO/Savannah, GA) received the start in goal for the Cardinals.  Concordia scored first with a 5-on-3 advantage with Joey Gerace (FR/Jamestown, NY) finding the back of the net on an assist from Brendan Pfeiffer (SO/Ypsilanti, MI).  CUAA still maintained a 5-on-4 powerplay advantage, and 13 seconds later Matt Winter (SO/Nashua, N.H.) scored with Zack Williams and Tyler Groth (SO/South Lyon, MI) drawing assists.  Eastern Michigan scored late in the period and Concordia led 2-1 after the 1st.

 
The Cardinals began the 2nd period on the power play and Zack Williams scored 30 seconds in with Abel Christians (FR/Grand Rapids, MI) and Cameron Pfeiffer (JR/Ypsilati, MI) assisting.  Elijah Gibbons made 5 saves in the first 5 minutes of the period, but Eastern Michigan was able to score to cut the Concordia lead to 3-2.  EMU scored again at the 17:54 mark to tie the game 3-3, but Tristan Waechter (FR/Fairfield, CA) responded with a goal 12 seconds later to put the Cardinals back in the lead.  Abel Christians and Briant Grant assisted on the goal and CUAA led 4-3 after the 2nd.

 
Eastern Michigan began the 3rd period on the powerplay, but Joey Gerace scored a shorthanded goal for his second marker of the game with assists going to Thomas Hendry (FR/Salt Lake City, UT) and Tyler Groth.  The Cardinals took a commanding 6-3 lead when Tyler Groth scored at the 5:44 mark off assists from Matt Winter and Jarod Segal (JR/Keene, NH).  Eastern Michigan scored one more goal in the period and pulled their goalie late in the game for an extra attacker.  Thomas Hendry was able to score in the empty net and the Cardinals secured the 7-4 win.

 
The Cardinals will play their next game on March 8 when they begin WHAC Tournament play.  Concordia received the #5 seed and will face off against #4 seed Lawrence Tech.  Game time is still yet to be determined.
