WESTMINSTER, Calif. - Several firsts were accomplished Friday at Chapman and No. 8 ranked CSUN finished off the calendar year with a bang beating the Panthers 20-2.

Senior goalie Brandon Hagen made his first career start in his second season with the team and earned the victory. Meanwhile freshman forward Ross Ponce scored his first two career goals, one of which was on the power play, and freshman Alec Wilson potted his first official goal as well. Not to be outdone freshman defenseman Zach Carnes scored his first career shorthanded goal and it just so happened to be the game winner which was also a first for Carnes.

The Matadors went up 6-0 after the first period on goals from freshman Grayson Szumilas, sophomore George Reznikov, Carnes, junior Jaime Velasquez, senior Eli Berengut and junior Quentin Abaya. Berengut and Abaya's goals were also shorthanded. They were the second shorties of the season for both players, the seventh career one for Berengut and the third career one for Abaya who was back in the lineup after missing the last five games with a shoulder injury.

It was more of the same in the second as CSUN got goals from senior Cameron Rorick, sophomore Matt Bushton on the power play, Ponce, junior John Michael Laurin, Abaya, Bushton and Szumilas to make it 13-0. Chapman finally broke the shutout at 3:40 with a power play goal by Max Udow. The Panthers got a little closer at 1:25 as Jake Greif beat Hagen.

But the Matadors scored seven unanswered goals in the third to put the game away. They came from Velasquez, senior Alex Marbach, Ponce on the power play, Reznikov on the power play, Laurin, Velasquez for the hat trick and Wilson.

CSUN dominated the special teams battle finishing a perfect 3-for-3 on the man advantage and scoring three shorthanded goals. Meanwhile Chapman went just 1-for-7 on the power play.

Seven CSUN players had multi goal games while Marbach and Bushton each scored their first goals of the season. Velasquez recorded his second career hat trick in his first season with the team.

The Matadors remained perfect against Chapman all-time improving their record against the Panthers to 13-0.

CSUN will now take time off to enjoy the holiday season and return to the ice January 11 to take on WCHC newcomer UC Santa Barbara at Ice In Paradise for the first time ever.
