BARRIE - The Kitchener Panthers outlasted the Barrie Baycats in an extra-innings pitcher's duel Tuesday night, finally scoring in the 11th inning to win Game 1 of the Intercounty Baseball League championship series.
The 1-0 victory snapped the Baycats' 20-game winning streak, including seven straight wins in the playoffs. Noelvis Entenza didn't allow a hit and struck out eight over seven innings. Barrie's Frank Garces gave up seven hits but no runs over nine innings.
Brian Burton tripled off Chris Nagorski in the 11th and came home on an RBI single from Keegan Marsden.
Game 2 in the series goes Thursday night in Kitchener.
The Panthers improved to 8-0 in the playoffs after Burton tripled to centre-field on a full count and scored three pitches later.
Burton finished 3-for-5, while Marsden and Tanner Nivins had two hits apiece.
Three Panthers pitchers combined to one-hit the reigning four-time champs. Entenza, who walked four, was followed by Mike Schnurr who picked up the win after striking out two and walking two. The only Baycats hit came in the bottom of the 10th when Branfy Infante singled with one out.
Miguel Lahera earned his first save with a perfect 11th inning.
Nagorski took the loss, giving up a run on three hits in two innings. He walked one and struck out one. Offensively, Barrie's Jordan Castaldo and Kyle DeGrace each had a stolen base.
