TORONTO, ON - They keep rolling.
The Barrie Baycats defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 13-1 on Tuesday evening to improve to 20-8 on the regular season.
With the loss, the Maple Leafs fall to 13-14.
Baycats starter Santos Arias recorded the victory, tossing six innings while giving up one earned run on four hits and five base on balls, while striking out five batters along the way.
Baycats first basemen Tim Smith led the way at the plate, going six-for-six.
Maple Leafs starter Marek Deska took the loss, tossing four and two-thirds of an inning while giving up nine earned runs on fourteen hits and three base on balls, while striking out one batter along the way.
BARRIE - 13-21-1
TORONTO - 1-5-2
BIGGEST PLAY OF THE GAME: In the top of the fourth inning -- with the Baycats leading 2-0 -- Baycats catcher Branfy Infante hit a two-run RBI double with the bases loaded to give the Baycats a 4-0 lead.
Baycats second basemen Carson Burns scored all the way from first base on the same play due to a fielder error by Maple Leafs right fielder Garret Takamatsu, while Infante himself would come around to score on a balk.
The 6-0 lead would prove too much for the Maple Leafs.
NEWS AND NOTES FROM THE GAME: Both Infante and Baycats right fielder Ryan Spataro hit their first home runs of the season tonight, while Baycats designated hitter Kyle DeGrace went three-for-five with one base on balls.
He is now five-for-eight with two base on balls in his last two games, as he continues to show signs of breaking out of his season-long slump at the plate.
Meanwhile, Arias has dropped his Intercounty Baseball League best ERA (among starters) to 1.96.
BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FROM THE GAME: This may be the most talented and deepest lineup the Baycats have had since their championship run began.
With Smith in the five spot, and former league All-Stars DeGrace, outfielder Jeff Cowan and Infante in the six, seven and eight spots, there is nowhere for pitchers to hide when facing this lineup.
Never mind the fact that former All-Star Stevie Lewis is on the bench, as is outfielder Brandon Dhue, who came into tonight's contest with an OPS at 1.028.
The Baycats return to action tomorrow evening against the Brantford Red Sox from Arnold Anderson Stadium in Brantford.
First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
