Errors Doom Suns in Home Loss

DELAND, Fla.- The DeLand Suns could not dig themselves out of a hole produced by eight errors, and suffered an 8-2 loss to the Leesburg Lightning at Melching Field on Tuesday night. The win was Leesburg's eleventh in a row, and dropped the Suns to 7-8 on the season.

Leesburg never trailed in the contest, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. Reigning FCSL Player of the Week Jose Crisostomo (Miami Dade) drove in a pair of runners with a two-out single. Both runs were unearned to starting pitcher Ryan Fultz (Troy) due to an error earlier in the inning.

The Suns got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the frame. With Brayden Sisson (Kentucky Wesleyan) on second and Kyle Ball (Stetson) on first, Geordon Blanton (Marshall) singled to center field, driving in Sisson and cutting the Leesburg lead down to 2-1.

DeLand would also score in the third inning, tying the game at two. The Suns loaded the bases on a single, a dropped third strike, and a walk, and Sisson added an RBI to go with his run scored on a fielder's choice.

Four runs in the top of the fifth inning allowed the Lightning to take the lead for good. The Leesburg surge was aided by five DeLand errors. The only RBI of the inning was provided by Wes Weeks (North Florida) on a single. Another run crossed the plate on a straight steal of home by Jacob Matulia (Flagler).

The Lightning added two more runs in the sixth inning to complete the game's scoring. With two outs, Crisostomo reached on a walk, and was doubled in by Matulia, who then came in to score on a steal of third and the eighth DeLand error of the game.

A bright spot on the day for the Suns was the pitching of Chris Burgess (Middle Georgia). Burgess worked three scoreless innings to end the game, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

The final game of the series between the Lightning and the Suns is set for Wednesday night at Pat Thomas Stadium, the fifth trip of the season to Leesburg for the Suns. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
