Extra Extra!

Date:  Source: IBL: Kitchener Panthers/K-W Junior Panthers

The Panthers and Cardinals would lock up in a very entertaining Pitcher’s duel at Jack Couch Park on Sunday afternoon.

Both Kitchener starter Yonder Martinez and Hamilton starter Josh Freeman looked very sharp limiting the damage that each offense would put up against them.

Kitchener jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Keegan Marsden continued his hot hitting ways from earlier on in the weekend.  Marsden leadoff the inning with a solo home run to left field for a 1-0 lead. That would be the only run Freeman would give up in his 5 innings of work.  Not to be out done Martinez worked 7 scoreless innings in his Panthers debut striking out 6 Hamilton batters.

Kitchener would get another run when Marsden reached on an error by the 1st baseman in the 6th inning.  It appeared the Panthers would waste the runner on the basepaths but Stephen Whalen came through with a 2 out RBI single to left field for a 2-0 lead.

Hamilton battled back in the 9th inning off of new Panthers reliever Miguel Lahera.  Chris Beer smacked a 1 out double and came around on a RBI single by Jon Dziomba.  It looked like the Panthers would walk away with a 2-1 win as Jonathan Palumbo popped up to shallow right field, however Chris Iltshishin couldn’t corral the popup and Dziomba scampered in to score the tying run.

The Cards couldn’t get anything going in the top of the 10th which set the stage for the bottom of the inning.  Tanner Nivins lead off the bottom of the inning with a double.  After the Cardinals got Brian Burton to fly out deep to center, Nivins would tag and move to 3rd with one out.  Hamilton elected to intentionally walk both Marsden and Andy Leader setting up a force at any bag.  After the Cards drew the infield in, Chris Iltshishin knocked a single through the drawn in infield to score Nivins and give the Panthers a 3-2 extra innings win.
