GARY — Colin Willis' road to the RailCats ran through Purdue North Central.
The Sheboygan, Wisconsin, native played baseball with 'Cats manager Greg Tagert's son Joshua, who recommended Willis multiple times.
Tagert saw Willis enough that he was recommending him to Frontier League teams and anyone who would listen. Enough that the RailCats finally signed Willis at the end of the 2016 season, in the middle of a race to the postseason.
As the 2017 regular season winds down, the RailCats are back in a postseason race and Willis earned American Association Rookie of the Year honors on Sunday.
"I woke up this morning to my roommate telling me 'you got Rookie of the Year!'" Willis said. "It's a great way to start the day."
