River Rats Win Extra-Inning Thriller to Take League Championship

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Sanford River Rats are the 2017 Florida Collegiate Summer League champions after their 6-5 extra-inning, comeback win against the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs.

 

The Diamond Dawgs leaped to an early lead scoring two runs off of a Matt Mackey (Northwest Florida State) double to left field in the first inning.

 

After a quick pitching change by the River Rats, one walk was allowed and a fly out to center field ended the inning.

 

In the next half inning, Dathan Prewett put the Rats into scoring position with a triple to left field. Sanford did not score any runs in the first.

 

The Dawgs put two insurance runs on the board in the second inning when Jordan Bowersox (Penn State) smashed a home run to left field.

 

Starting pitcher for the Dawgs, Riley Troutt (West Virginia) dominated on the mound pitching 5.1 innings with four hits, one runs, and six strike outs.

 

The Rats had another opportunity to score when Omar Villaman (Florida Southern) slapped a lead-off single in the sixth. After a wild pitch, Villaman sprinted to third base.

 

John Jones (South Carolina) singled, scoring Villaman.

 

The River Rats took the lead 5-4 in the seventh.

 

The inning started with Sergio Lopez (St. Thomas) at the plate. He drew a walk. Rodney Tennie (Georgia Gwinnett) walked as well.

 

After a pitching change, Elih Marrero (St. Thomas) hit a sacrifice groundout that advanced Lopez and Tennie 90 feet.

 

Richie Rivera (University of Tampa) singled to left field, driving in Lopez.

 

After a speedy steal from Rivera, Villaman clapped a two-RBI single, scoring Tennie and Rivera.

 

An error on the pitcher advanced Omar to third, and Jones was walked, putting runners on the corners.

 

Cody Oerther (High Point) hacked an RBI single, scoring Villaman.

 

The Diamond Dawgs tied the game 5-5 in the top of the eighth.

 

The Sanford River Rats won the game in the tenth inning when Prewett was hit by a pitch with bases loaded.

 

Omar Villaman was awarded the MVP of the game.

 

This is the league-leading fourth title for the River Rats!
