Quad City holds on for 5-4 win against Brampton

The Quad City Mallards survived a determined comeback attempt by the Brampton Beast on the way to a 5-4 win.

A goal by Mike Hellyer put Quad City up 5-3 in the second period, but Brampton pulled to within one on Scotty Howes's tally 18:22 into the third period.

The Mallards were sparked by Hellyer, who tallied one goal. Hellyer scored 15:18 into the second period to make the score Quad City. Mike Stinziani provided the assist.

Quad City made Beast's netminders to work without much rest, firing 31 shots and forcing 26 saves. Grant Rollheiser made 12 stops and Kristofer Westblom made 14. The Mallards managed to stay out of the box better than usual, racking up one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Quad City ended up below its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The Mallards' defensemen were a huge part of the offense, scoring two goals and taking 13 shots.

Quad City additionally got points from Michael Monfredo, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Gabriel Levesque, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Quad City included Jeff Lee and Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel, who each put in one. In addition, Quad City received assists from Jim McKenzie, who had two and Gergo Nagy and Matt Boyd, who each chipped in one.

By firing 32 shots on goal, the Beast exceeded the 24.2 shots they average per game this year.

Brampton also had goals scored by Josh McQuade and Matt Caruana, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Brampton were Dan Milan, Andrew Fournier, Michael MacIsaac, Tylor Michel, Jason Pitton, Rob Collins, and Tyler Butler, who contributed one a piece.

Thomas Heemskerk made 28 saves for Quad City on 32 shots. The Mallards registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. Brampton incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
