Rapid City hangs on, beats Arizona 4-2

Rapid City beat the Arizona Sundogs, 4-2, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Rapid City took over the lead for good with a goal by Kyle Peto at 5:24 in the first period. Jeff Lee provided the assist.

Jesse Schultz had a great game for Rapid City, netting two goals. Schultz's tallies came at 6:53 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Rapid City and 19:48 into the third to make the score 4-2 Rapid City.

Rapid City's defensemen were a huge part of the offense, scoring two goals and taking 13 shots. With 31 shots on target during the contest, Rapid City exceeded the 25.7 shots it averages per game this year.

Jamie VanderVeeken also scored for Rapid City. More assists for Rapid City came via Winston Day Chief, Rusty Masters, Scott Wray, Justin Sawyer, and Scott Brannon, who contributed one a piece.

The 28 shots that Arizona put on net surpassed the Sundogs' average of 24.3 shots per game this season.

Arizona was led by Johan Ryd, who tallied one goal and one assist. Ryd scored on the power play 9:13 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Rapid City. The Sundogs had gained a power play chance when VanderVeeken was whistled for slashing. Cody Purves picked up the assist. Arizona also got a goal from Jason Morgan as well. In addition, Arizona received assists from Matt McCready, who had one.

Tim Boron made 26 saves for Rapid City on 28 shots. Rapid City incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. David Brown rejected 27 shots on goal for Arizona. The Sundogs incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
