Tulsa wins tough contest against Denver, 4-2

The game between the Tulsa Oilers and the Denver Cutthroats was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Tulsa emerged with a 4-2 win.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Jeff Buvinow at 51 seconds of the third period.

Denver's power play was ineffective against the Oilers' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Tulsa was sparked by Michel Beausoleil, who finished with one goal. Beausoleil scored on the power play 2:52 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Tulsa. The Oilers had gotten the advantage when the Cutthroats' Mario Boilard was sent off for slashing. Drew Fisher picked up the assist.

The Tulsa penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 14.0 minutes per game the Oilers had been spending in the box. Tulsa's offense was clicking better than usual and put 24 shots on goal during the game, better than the 19.0 shots per game it averages. The Oilers' defensemen were a huge part of the offense, scoring two goals and taking 10 shots.

Tulsa additionally got points from Buvinow, who also had one goal and one assist and Fisher, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Tulsa also got a goal from Jason Weeks as well. Other players who recorded assists for Tulsa were Patrick Schafer, who had two and Ryan Menei, who had three.

By firing 43 shots on goal, Denver exceeded the 25.3 shots it averages per game this year.

The Cutthroats were led by Aaron MacKenzie, who racked up one goal and one assist. MacKenzie scored 16:21 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Tulsa. Brad Smyth provided the assist. A.J. Gale also scored for Denver. In addition, Denver received assists from Troy Schwab, who had two.

Shane Madolora recorded 41 saves for Tulsa. The Oilers registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Denver's Kieran Millan stopped 20 shots out of the 23 that he faced. The Cutthroats ended with 26 minutes in penalty time with three minors and two majors. Denver ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Adam Smyth was ejected from the game.
