Rapid City and the Quad City Mallards both failed to score in overtime, but Rapid City won the game 3-2 (2-1 SO) after Rusty Masters's deciding goal in the shootout.

The two teams needed 18 turns to complete the shootout. Quad City got a shootout goal from Mickey Lang. In addition to the clincher, Rapid City got a shootout goal from Damian Surma.

Rapid City came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Rapid City fell behind 2-1 after a goal by the Mallards' Mike Hellyer at 4:48 in the third period. Rapid City knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Kyle Peto at 12:00 in the third period.

In the losing effort, Quad City was led by Hellyer, who grabbed two goals. Hellyer scored the first of his two goals at 8:46 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Quad City. Matt Boyd picked up the assist. Hellyer's next tally made the score Quad City with 15:12 left in the third period. Shayne Toporowski provided the assist.

Rapid City excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Rapid City's offense was clicking better than usual and put 50 shots on goal during the game, better than the 25.2 shots per game it averages.

Rapid City was helped by Surma, who tallied one goal. Surma scored 13:57 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Jeff Lee picked up the assist. More assists for Rapid City came via Winston Day Chief, who had one.

The Mallards stifled Rapid City's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Quad City relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Hellyer, Toporowski and Patrik Levesque took 13 of the team's 25 shots. The Mallards could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game.

Rapid City's Tim Boron stopped 23 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Rapid City incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. John Murray made 47 saves for Quad City on 49 shots.
