Missouri vanquishes Denver in shootout, 2-1 (4-3 SO)

Colt King netted the deciding goal for the Missouri Mavericks in the shootout as Mavericks prevailed over the Denver Cutthroats, 2-1 (4-3 SO).

The shootout featured 16 attempts between both teams. Denver's shootout goals were scored by A.J. Gale, Brad Smyth, and Luke Fulghum. Missouri also got shootout goals from Andrew Courtney, Kyle Hood, and Trevor Kell.

The Mavericks were often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Missouri had been averaging 16.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Mavericks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Cutthroats to score on any of their three power plays. By firing 41 shots on goal, Missouri exceeded the 23.5 shots it averages per game this year.

The Mavericks were helped by Kell, who finished with one goal. Kell scored 15:21 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Missouri. John-Scott Dickson provided the assist.

Denver racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 16.0 minutes per game the Cutthroats had been spending in the box. Denver's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Missouri power plays. The Cutthroats' offense operated below they season average. Denver averages 3.1 goals per game. The Cutthroats relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Gale, Fulghum and Troy Schwab took 13 of the team's 21 shots.

Denver was led by Mike Towns, who scored the team's only goal. Towns scored 12:55 into the third period to make the score 1-1. Fulghum assisted on the tally.

Mike Clemente made 20 saves for Missouri on 21 shots. Kent Patterson recorded 39 saves for the Cutthroats. Denver ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jean-Philipp Chabot was ejected from the game.
