Arizona uses shootout to best Denver, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

Kevin Petovello netted the deciding goal for the Arizona Sundogs in the shootout as Sundogs prevailed over the Denver Cutthroats, 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams. Denver got a shootout goal from A.J. Gale. Arizona's other shootout goal was scored by Derek LeBlanc.

The Sundogs saw a three-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Arizona made the score 4-1 on a goal by Chad Nehring at 9:19 in the second period. The Cutthroats evened things up at 4-4 on a goal by Markus Lauridsen at 18:54 in the third period.

In the losing effort, Denver was paced by Lauridsen, who registered two goals and one assist. Lauridsen scored the first of his two goals at 10:02 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Arizona. Troy Schwab picked up the assist. Lauridsen's next tally made the score with 1:06 left in the third period. A hooking call on Gale put the Cutthroats on the penalty kill. Schwab provided the assist.

The Sundogs bested their season scoring average. Arizona averages 2.9 goals per game. By firing 31 shots on goal, the Sundogs exceeded the 20.2 shots they average per game this year.

Arizona was led by Petovello, who grabbed one goal. Petovello scored 9:44 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Arizona. Jason Morgan picked up the assist. Arizona additionally got points from Nehring, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Jake Hauswirth also scored for Arizona. In addition, Arizona received assists from Mike Glaicar, who had two and Adam Smyth, Ron Meyers, and LeBlanc, who each chipped in one.

Denver excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The defensemen of the Cutthroats were also effective in the Sundogs' zone, and came away with four goals. With 36 shots on target during the contest, Denver exceeded the 24.8 shots it averages per game this year.

Denver also got a goal from Aaron MacKenzie as well. Other players who recorded assists for Denver were Luke Fulghum, who had one and Brad Smyth, who had two.

Adam Russo made 32 saves for Arizona on 36 shots. The Sundogs incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Cutthroats' Kieran Millan stopped 26 shots out of the 30 that he faced. Denver incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
