Rapid City beats Bloomington 5-3 as Konkle gets hat trick

The Bloomington Blaze could not stop Rapid City's Jarrett Konkle, who tallied a hat trick in a 5-3 win.

Konkle's first goal came 13:52 into the first period. He then added goals at 9:00 into the second and at 4:32 into the third.

Bloomington's power play was ineffective against Rapid City's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Rapid City racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 34 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game Rapid City had been spending in the box. Rapid City bested its season scoring average. Rapid City averages 2.5 goals per game. Rapid City relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Konkle, Rusty Masters and Scott Brannon took 11 of the team's 21 shots.

Other players who recorded assists for Rapid City were Jamie VanderVeeken, who had two, Damian Surma, who had three, and Riley Weselowski and Jeff Lee, who contributed one a piece.

Rapid City was unable to stop the Blaze from sending pucks towards the net, and Bloomington eventually piled up 33 shots on goal. The Blaze's defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with 18 shots between them.

Bloomington was led by David Gilbert, who finished with two goals. Gilbert scored the first of his two goals at 10:32 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Bloomington. Tyler Gron picked up the assist. Gilbert's next tally made the score 3-3 with zero seconds left in the second period. Kyle Bochek provided the assist. Bloomington also got a goal from Jon Booras as well. More assists for Bloomington came via Jared Walker, Sebastien Trudeau, Nicklas Lindberg, and Matthew Larke, who each chipped in one.

Tim Boron made 30 saves for Rapid City on 33 shots. Rapid City registered two goals on five power play opportunities. For Rapid City, Justin Sawyer was ejected from the game. The Blaze's starting goalie, Gerry Festa, made 11 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Dan Dunn, who stopped five shots. Bloomington ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major.
