Allen vanquishes Arizona in shootout, 4-3 (4-1 SO)

Jamie Schaafsma netted the deciding goal for the Allen Americans in the shootout as Americans prevailed over the Arizona Sundogs, 4-3 (4-1 SO).

The two teams needed seven turns to complete the shootout. Arizona got a shootout goal from David Schlemko. In addition to the clincher, Allen got shootout goals from Scotty Howes, Schaafsma, and Brett Skinner.

The Sundogs' power play was ineffective against the Americans' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Allen's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Arizona power plays.

The Americans were led by Adam Pineault, who registered one goal and one assist. Pineault scored on the power play 11:12 into the first period to make the score 1-1. A holding penalty on Adam Smyth had put Allen on the power play. Schaafsma provided the assist. Darryl Bootland also scored for Allen. More assists for Allen came via Trevor Ludwig, who had two and Skinner and Howes, who each chipped in one.

Arizona relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Schlemko, Chad Nehring and Mario Larocque took 18 of the team's 29 shots. The Sundogs' defensemen played well offensively, producing two goals while racking up 13 shots.

Arizona also got points from Schlemko, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Arizona also got a goal from Jason Morgan as well. In addition, Arizona received assists from Mikael Bedard, Kyle Chipchura, Cody Purves, and Pascal Morency, who contributed one a piece.

The Americans' Steve Silverthorn stopped 26 shots out of the 29 that he faced. Allen incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Adam Russo rejected 22 shots on goal for Arizona. The Sundogs incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
