Vaskivuo leads Fort Wayne over Dayton, 6-3

Behind a great game by Mike Vaskivuo, who had one goal and three assists, the Fort Wayne Komets defeated the Dayton Gems, 6-3.

Vaskivuo scored 10:09 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Fort Wayne. Chris Auger picked up the assist. Vaskivuo dished an assist on Colin Chaulk's goal that made the score 1-0 Fort Wayne at 4:26 into the first period. He then added assists on Brett Smith's goal at 9:06 into the second and on Chaulk's goal at 17:00 into the second.

Fort Wayne pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 21 penalty minutes.

The Komets surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Fort Wayne has scored at the pace of 3.5 goals per game during the current campaign. By firing 47 shots on goal, the Komets exceeded the 33.7 shots they average per game this year.

Tyler Miller also scored for Fort Wayne. In addition, Fort Wayne received assists from Frankie DeAngelis, Stephon Thorne, Brent Henley, Leo Thomas, Jamie Milam, and Kaleigh Schrock, who each chipped in one.

Dayton excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Gems' defensemen bolstered Dayton's offensive attack, as they bombarded Nick Boucher with 14 shots.

The Gems were led by Jonathan Ornelas, who registered two goals and one assist. Ornelas scored the first of his two goals at 7:18 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Greg Labenski assisted on the tally. Ornelas' next tally made the score 6-3 Fort Wayne with 16:31 left in the third period. Nick Fanto provided the assist. More assists for Dayton came via Matt Baxter, who had one and Kyle Bochek, who had two.

Boucher rejected 23 shots on goal for Fort Wayne. Dayton's starting goalie, Larry Sterling, made 27 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Dan Dunn, who stopped 14 shots. The Gems totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-7 on the power play.
