Wichita uses early goal to top Rapid City, 3-1

Matt Summers gave the Wichita Thunder the lead in the first period, and Rapid City was never able to catch up in a close game that ended 3-1.

Summers provided Wichita with the game-winning tally when he scored 5:56 into the the first period. Travis Wight provided the assist.

Matt Robinson had a great game for the Thunder, netting two goals. Robinson's tallies came at 16:14 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Wichita and 19:50 into the third to make the score 3-1 Wichita.

Wichita was led by goalie Bryan Hogan, who finished with 39 saves while allowing one goal. Hogan certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.89 entering the contest.

The Thunder put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Rapid City to score on any of its six power plays. With 35 shots on target during the contest, Wichita exceeded the 21.0 shots it averages per game this year.

In addition, Wichita received assists from Chris Chappell, RG Flath, and Jarred Mohr, who each chipped in one.

Rapid City excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Rapid City did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. Rapid City puts an average of 3.4 pucks into the net per game. The Thunder were unable to stop Rapid City from sending pucks towards the net, and Rapid City eventually piled up 40 shots on goal.

Rapid City was led by Les Reaney, who scored the team's only goal. Reaney scored 3:48 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Wichita. Shawn Limpright assisted on the tally.

Wichita incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors. Tim Boron made 32 saves for Rapid City on 34 shots. Rapid City incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
