Bloomington survives Fort Wayne comeback, wins 5-4

The Fort Wayne Komets tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Bloomington Blaze would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

A goal by Travis Granbois put Bloomington up 5-2 in the second period, but Fort Wayne pulled to within one on Jean-Michel Rizk's tally 8:13 into the third period.

The Blaze found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Bloomington has scored at the pace of two goals per game during the current campaign. By firing 39 shots on goal, the Blaze exceeded the 29 shots they average per game this year.

The Komets forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and three majors for 55 minutes in penalty time. Fort Wayne surpassed its season average of 21 penalty minutes per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals. With 49 shots on target during the contest, the Komets exceeded the 30 shots they average per game this year.

Bloomington additionally got points from Doug Krantz, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Bloomington got a goal from Jon Booras as well. Other players who recorded assists for Bloomington were Mark Znutas, who had two and Vladimir Nikiforov, Jerry Pollastrone, Aaron Dawson, and Luke Popko, who each chipped in one.

Fort Wayne was led by Frankie DeAngelis, who registered two goals and one assist. DeAngelis scored the first of his two goals short handed at 6:14 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Bloomington. The Komets were on a disadvantage when Bryant Molle went off the ice for fighting (aggressor). DeAngelis' next tally short handed made the score 3-2 Bloomington with 10:57 left in the first period. Stephon Thorne picked up the assist. Jamie Milam also scored for Fort Wayne. More assists for Fort Wayne came via Brett Smith and Brent Henley, who contributed one each.

Bloomington's starting goalie, Zane Kalemba, made 42 saves and finished with the win before he was taken out in favor of Brian Mahoney-Wilson, who stopped three shots. The Blaze incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Gerry Festa took the loss and made 32 saves before being replaced by Nick Boucher who made two saves. Fort Wayne registered one goal on four power play opportunities. Team's Molle and Boucher were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.

For the Komets, Molle and Boucher were ejected from the contest. Bloomington registered three goals on eight power play opportunities.
