Allen pulls away in second, rolls over Denver, 6-1

The Denver Cutthroats was within striking distance after one period, but the Allen Americans put the pedal down in the second en route to a 6-1 victory.

Allen got the win with help from a great game by Brian McMillin, who had two goals and two assists. McMillin scored the first of his two goals at 16:53 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Allen. Mike Berube assisted on the tally. McMillin's next tally made the score 6-2 Allen with 22 seconds left in the second period. The Americans had gotten the advantage when Denver's Steve Kaunisto was sent off for slashing. Tyler Ludwig picked up the assist.

Allen forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and three majors for 59 minutes in penalty time. The Americans surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Allen found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Americans average 3.8 goals per game. Allen relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Bruce Graham, Jonathan Lessard and Ludwig took 25 of the team's 49 shots.

Allen also got points from Anthony Maiani, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Jamie Schaafsma, who also had one goal and one assist, and Lessard, who also registered three goals and one assist. More assists for Allen came via Greger Hanson, Steven Tarasuk, and Spencer Asuchak, who contributed one each.

The Cutthroats' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and four majors for 84 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Denver had been spending in the box. The Cutthroats could not produce up to their normal offensive output. Denver averages 3.3 goals per game. The Cutthroats relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Kyle Fletcher, Vincent Arseneau and Kaunisto took 15 of the team's 21 shots.

Denver was led by Garett Bembridge, who scored the team's only goal. Bembridge scored on the power play 17:38 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Allen. A roughing penalty on Berube had put the Cutthroats on the power play. AJ Gale provided the assist.

Bryan Pitton took the win and made 19 saves before being replaced by Willie Yanakeff who made one save. The Americans registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Team's Dallas Ehrhardt, Garrett Klotz, and Darryl Bootland were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Denver's starting goalie, Kent Patterson, made 28 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of John Griggs, who stopped 15 shots. The Cutthroats registered one goal on four power play opportunities. For Denver, Sean Zimmerman, Gale, Daniel Amesbury, and Aaron MacKenzie were ejected from the contest.
