Arizona downs Wichita in overtime, 6-5 (OT)Tims Toyota Center Fri, Mar 28, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
David Rutherford gave the Arizona Sundogs a 6-5 (OT) victory over the Wichita Thunder when he scored 4:41 into the extra period. Arizona came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Sundogs fell behind 5-3 after a power play goal by Wichita's Matt Summers at 17:31 in the second period. Arizona knotted things up at 5-5 on a goal by Rutherford at 15:38 in the third period. The Sundogs outdid their season average for goals scored. Arizona averages 3.0 goals per game. With 50 shots on target during the contest, the Sundogs exceeded the 24.4 shots they average per game this year. Arizona also got points from Mike Forney, who also grabbed one goal and three assists and Brandon Coccimiglio, who also had one goal and two assists. Arizona also got a goal from Justin Pender as well. In addition, Arizona received assists from Garrett Clarke and Alex Tuckerman, who each chipped in one and Shawn Limpright and Bryan Cameron, who contributed two each. The Thunder put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Arizona to score on any of its three power plays. Wichita relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Andrew Martens, Summers and RG Flath took 19 of the team's 37 shots. The Thunder were led by Tomas Klempa, who finished with two goals and one assist. Klempa scored the first of his two goals at 10:45 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Wichita. Summers picked up the assist. Klempa's next tally made the score 4-3 Wichita with 3:11 left in the second period. Flath provided the assist. Wichita additionally got points from Summers, who also registered one goal and one assist. Wichita also had goals scored by Matt Robinson and Jason Wilson, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Wichita were Dustin Donaghy, who had one and Mike Wilson, who had two. Andrew Engelage took the win and made 32 saves before being replaced by Adam Brown who made zero saves. The Sundogs ended with 16 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. David Brown made 44 saves for Wichita on 50 shots. The Thunder totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play.
