Allen wins tough contest against Wichita, 4-3Intrust Bank Arena Fri, Feb 21, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Allen Americans escaped with a 4-3 victory over the Wichita Thunder. Allen gained the winning advantage on a goal by Brian McMillin 6:50 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer. The Americans was paced on offense by Ben Power and Spencer Asuchak, who combined for five points. Power grabbed two goals and Asuchak also added one goal and two assists. Allen was below its usual level of shot production, taking 20 shots compared to the 25.4 the Americans average. Allen also got points from Asuchak, who also registered one goal and two assists. In addition, Allen received assists from Kale Kerbashian, who had two and Tyler Ludwig, Jamie Schaafsma, Jonathon Zion, and Bryan Pitton, who each chipped in one. Wichita put 41 shots on net during the contest, more than the 28.7 it averages per game. The Thunder could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game. Wichita was helped by RG Flath, who tallied two goals and one assist. Flath scored the first of his two goals at 16:54 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Matt Summers provided the assist. Flath's next tally made the score 2-2 with 10:14 left in the second period. The Thunder had gotten the advantage when Allen's Schaafsma was sent off for hooking. Summers picked up the assist. Wichita additionally got points from Summers, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. More assists for Wichita came via Jesse Dudas, Tomas Klempa, and Andrew Martens, who contributed one a piece. The Americans' Pitton stopped 38 shots out of the 41 that he faced. Allen incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. David Brown rejected 16 shots on goal for Wichita. The Thunder registered two goals on six power play opportunities.
