Rapid City survives Wichita comeback, wins 6-4

The Wichita Thunder almost clawed their way back from a three-goal deficit, but Rapid City managed to pull out a 6-4 win in the end.

Rapid City led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Rapid City's Jared Brown's scored at 11:50 in the third period to put Rapid City up 5-2.

Rapid City got the win thanks to a great game by Eric Giosa, who had two goals and one assist. Giosa scored the first of his two goals at 9:10 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Rapid City. Sean Erickson assisted on the tally. Giosa's next tally made the score 4-1 Rapid City with 5:42 left in the second period. Scott Wray picked up the assist.

Rapid City racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and three majors for 37 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 16.0 minutes per game Rapid City had been spending in the box. Rapid City's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, Rapid City averages 3.6 goals per contest. By firing 38 shots on goal, Rapid City exceeded the 32.5 shots it averages per game this year.

Rapid City additionally got points from Brown, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Rapid City included Winston Day Chief, Bob Preece, and Kyle Stroh, who each put in one. In addition, Rapid City received assists from Jesse Schultz, Konrad Reeder, Justin Sawyer, Matthew Larke, and Scott Brannon, who contributed one a piece.

Wichita forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and three majors for 25 minutes in penalty time. The Thunder surpassed its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. Wichita stifled Rapid City's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Thunder put 30 shots on net during the contest, more than the 25.0 they average per game. Wichita's offense was helped by the efforts of its defensemen, who managed to put 13 shots on net during the game.

The Thunder were led by Tomas Klempa, who registered one goal and one assist. Klempa scored 9:06 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Rapid City. Jon Madden assisted on the tally. Wichita also had goals scored by Jesse Dudas, Matt Robinson, and RG Flath, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Wichita were Mike Wilson, Matt Summers, Erick Lizon, Andrew Martens, and Jon Booras, who each chipped in one.

Rapid City's Keaton Hartigan stopped 26 shots out of the 30 that he faced. Rapid City registered zero goals on four power play opportunities. David Brown rejected 32 shots on goal for Wichita. The Thunder registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities.
